Scripture Reflection
John 15:5 – “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” NKJV

Psychology teaches that every human being has six basic psychological needs that shape their pursuit of fulfilment and meaning in life. These needs are security or certainty, variety, significance, love and connection, growth, and contribution. People naturally strive to meet these needs in different ways. However, when these needs are pursued apart from God, the result is emptiness and frustration. Only God can truly and fully meet these needs in a way that satisfies both the soul and spirit. In this brief bible teaching we will examine each of these needs and how God provides for them through His Word and relationship with Him.

1. Security (Certainty)

The first basic need is the need for security. Every person, regardless of gender, race, background or status, longs for security, a sense of safety, stability and assurance that tomorrow will not betray today. It is a universal pursuit woven into the human heart, driving choices, shaping dreams and anchoring hope in something or someone that promises lasting peace and protection

Every individual desires safety, stability, and assurance that their life will be preserved. People search for this security in money, possessions, career stability, or even in relationships. While these things can provide temporary comfort, they are fragile and can be lost in a moment. The Bible points us to God as the true source of lasting security.

Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” NKJV.

Safety in life does not come from human effort or earthly structures but from placing our trust in God. He is the unchanging and eternal refuge who never fails His children. In Psalm 46:1 the psalmist declares, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” NKJV.

This means that true certainty is not found in human arrangements but in the faithful presence of God who upholds His people.

For the believer, security is ultimately eternal. Jesus assures His followers in John 10:28 that no one can snatch them out of His hand. In Christ, the fear of uncertainty is removed because He secures our salvation and future. Therefore, true security is not built on wealth, influence, human connections or circumstances but on God who never changes.

2. Variety

While people long for certainty, they also desire variety. For example, my wife and I enjoy eating our local food, but we both agree that it can become tiresome at times. So we explore cuisines from other cultures to bring variety and sparkle to our shared mealtimes.

Life without change becomes monotonous and uninspiring. Human beings seek variety through new experiences, challenges, and opportunities. However, when pursued without God, variety can lead to reckless living and dissatisfaction, because no experience outside of God can truly satisfy the soul.

God provides variety in His creation and in the life, He calls us to live. Ecclesiastes 3:1 declares, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” NKJV.

Life in Christ is not stagnant but filled with seasons, opportunities, and new works of grace. God calls His people to walk by faith, and faith always involves new steps and growth.

The lives of the apostles in the New Testament show how following Christ was filled with variety. One day they were teaching, another day healing, another day in prison, and another day witnessing miracles. Each season, though different, brought glory to God and kept their lives full of meaning. When variety is embraced in Christ, it becomes purposeful rather than aimless, because it aligns with His will.

3. Significance

Every human being desires to feel significant, to know that their life matters and has value.

Even within the warmth of a loving family, a child surrounded by siblings longs to be seen, heard, and valued, not merely as one among many but as someone uniquely cherished, with gifts worth celebrating and a voice that matters, yearning for affirmation that their presence brings joy and purpose to the whole.

People often seek this significance through achievements, recognition, power, or influence. Yet all human recognition is temporary. The true source of significance is found in God who created us in His image and redeemed us through Christ.

Psalm 139:14 says, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.” NKJV.

Our worth and value come not from human praise but from God who designed us with purpose. Furthermore, believers are called children of God. First John 3:1 declares, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God.” NKJV. There is no higher significance than being a child of the eternal King.

In addition, significance in the kingdom of God is measured differently than in the world. Jesus taught in Matthew 23:11, “But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.” NKJV.

Dear reader, this may be hard to hear, but in God’s Kingdom, true greatness is found in humility and service, not in professional degrees, qualifications, status, or titles. Therefore, significance in Christ is eternal and cannot be diminished by the shifting opinions of people.

God bless you, in Jesus Name. Amen
