“Do Not Be Afraid” as a Resurrection Mandate and the Power of Worship
Bible Text
Matthew 28:10; “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.’” NKJV
The order and timing of Jesus’ words in Matthew 28 are deeply instructive. The women first encountered the resurrected Christ. They responded by holding His feet and worshiping Him. Only after receiving their worship did Jesus speak His next recorded words to them. “Do not be afraid.” This sequence establishes a kingdom principle. True worship dispels fear. True worship precedes fearless obedience.

Dear friend, genuine worship of God produces a heart that obeys Him boldly, confidently and without fear
Worship is not just singing nice gospel music; it is the posture of the heart that says:
- “God, You are worthy.”
- “Your will is higher than mine.”
- “I trust You completely.”
When a person reaches that place, fear dissipates and obedience is no longer a struggle, it becomes the overflow of love.
Fear as a Spiritual Barrier
Fear is not merely an emotion in Scripture. It is a demonic force that resists divine movement. Fear entered human experience at the fall when Adam said, “I was afraid” in Genesis 3:10. From that moment, fear became associated with guilt, separation, and loss of intimacy with God. Fear hides. Worship draws near.
Throughout Scripture, fear consistently appears at moments of transition, calling, or divine interruption. Moses feared his inadequacy in Exodus 3. Joshua faced fear as he stepped into leadership in Joshua 1. Gideon feared his insignificance in Judges 6. In each case, God addressed fear before progress could continue.
The resurrection marked the greatest transition in history. Death was defeated. Sin was judged. The devil and all his wicked schemes was defeated. A new covenant reality was fully inaugurated. Fear had no place in this new covenant. Fear was already defeated on the cross. Therefore, Jesus addressed it immediately with absolute authority.
Worship and the Displacement of Fear
The women worshiped Jesus by holding His feet. This act is full of meaning. They acknowledged His authority, His victory, and His identity as Lord. Worship is not emotional expression alone. Do not get me wrong; as believers, we are allowed to express our emotions before God when we come to Him in wholehearted worship. However, true worship is alignment with truth. True worship is alignment with God’s Word and Will.
Fear thrives where truth is obscured. Worship restores clarity. Psalm 34:3–4 says, “Oh, magnify the Lord with me… I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”
Worship magnifies God, not problems. When God is rightly magnified, fear shrinks. When we worship God in spirit and truth, doubt evaporates into oblivion.
Worship in spirit and truth engages both the heart and the mind. Jesus taught in John 4:24 that true worship must be spiritual and truthful. This means worship rooted in the reality of who God is and what He has done.
Dear reader, the resurrection is the ultimate truth that destroys fear. Romans 8:11 confirms that the Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now lives in believers. This indwelling power replaces fear with confidence.
“Do Not Be Afraid” as Preparation for Commission
Jesus did not speak these words to comfort alone. He spoke them to prepare the women for responsibility. Fear disables obedience. Courage releases assignment.
Notice that immediately after saying “Do not be afraid,” Jesus gave instruction. “Go and tell My brethren.” Fear must be addressed before mission can be fulfilled. The Great Commission is impossible to carry out in fear.
The calling and great destiny that God has given you is impossible to fulfil under the atmosphere of fear. Fear paralyses purpose.
This principle remains true today. Fear silences testimony. Fear delays obedience. Fear distorts calling. Second Timothy 1:7 states that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.
Resurrection life through Christ Jesus equips you as a covenant child of God to live from divine empowerment, not human apprehension.
Practical Implications for Daily Life
In everyday experience, fear often appears after loss, change, failure, or uncertainty. Just as the women approached the tomb with grief and unanswered questions, believers today face moments that shake security. Worship is the spiritual discipline that recentres the heart. If ever you feel your life or heart out of alignment with God’s purpose in 2026, go back to the discipline of true worship before God.
Dear friend, “there is something deeply spiritual about a heart posture of worship before God. It has the power to stir a person back onto the path that God has mandated for their life”
When believers consistently worship God in truth, fear loses its authority. Worship does not deny reality. It interprets reality through God’s sovereignty. Isaiah 41:10 connects God’s presence with fearlessness when God says, “Fear not, for I am with you.”
The resurrected Christ still speaks the same message today. In every new season, change, transition, or assignment, His words remain relevant. Do not be afraid. Worship anchors faith. Faith releases obedience. Obedience reveals the living Christ to the world.
The resurrection did not remove opposition, but it removed fear’s right to rule. That is the enduring power of Jesus’ words after worship.
Let worship from a pure and sincere heart be your daily discipline this year, and watch God shift you into realms of glory and honour beyond your wisdom and effort.
Happy New Year!
