Dear friend, the Bible does not use modern psychological terms like “emotional trauma” or “emotional injury,” but it speaks extensively about deep inner pain, wounded hearts, grief, betrayal, and sorrow of soul.

The Bible recognises that human beings can be hurt deeply within, not only physically but also emotionally and spiritually. Scripture describes these experiences using phrases such as a broken heart, a wounded spirit, sorrow of heart, bitterness of soul, and heaviness of spirit. These terms refer to emotional pain and/or emotional trauma.

1. “Broken heart”

Psalm 34:18“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

2. “Wounded spirit”

Proverbs 18:14“The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but a wounded spirit who can bear?”

3. “Sorrow of heart”

Proverbs 15:13“A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.”

4. “Bitterness of soul”

1 Samuel 1:10“She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish.”

5. “Heaviness of spirit” / “Spirit of heaviness”

Isaiah 61:3“…the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness…”

These terms listed above refer to emotional pain and/or emotional trauma. Therefore, understanding these biblical descriptions helps explain what emotional hurt (pain) and emotional trauma are, and what often causes them.

1. What Emotional Hurt (Pain) Is in Biblical Terms

Emotional hurt is the pain or distress felt in the heart and mind because of painful experiences, words, or actions. It is the inner suffering that occurs when a person feels rejected, betrayed, misunderstood, humiliated, or deeply disappointed.

The Bible often describes this as a wounded heart or spirit.

Proverbs 15:13 (NKJV)
“A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.”

Here Scripture acknowledges that sorrow in the heart can break the spirit, meaning emotional pain can weaken a person’s inner strength and joy.

Another verse highlights the depth of emotional wounds:

Proverbs 18:14 (NKJV)
“The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?”

A broken spirit refers to deep emotional injury, where discouragement, grief, or disappointment overwhelms a person internally.

2. What Emotional Trauma Is from a Biblical Perspective

Emotional trauma is deep emotional hurt caused by overwhelming or repeated painful experiences. It is not simply momentary sadness. It is wounds that remain in the heart and affect how a person thinks, feels, and relates to others.

The Bible shows that people of faith experienced these kinds of deep emotional struggles.

For example, David frequently expressed emotional distress.

Psalm 6:6 (NKJV)
“I am weary with my groaning; all night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears.”

David describes intense emotional pain that affected his sleep and inner peace.

Similarly, the prophet Jeremiah spoke of profound emotional suffering.

Jeremiah 20:14–18 (NKJV) shows him expressing deep anguish and discouragement because of rejection and persecution.

These examples demonstrate that emotional trauma is a real human experience acknowledged in Scripture. Just because you are saved does not mean you are automatically immune from experiencing emotional pain or trauma. However, in Christ, we stand in a position of established victory, and from that place we enforce our victory over emotional pain and trauma just as we do over physical sickness.

3. What Causes Emotional Hurt and Trauma According to the Bible

The Bible identifies many sources of emotional pain. Some of the most common causes include the following.

1. Hurtful Words and Verbal Wounds

Words can deeply wound the heart.

Proverbs 12:18 (NKJV)
“There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health.”

Harsh criticism, insults, humiliation, and verbal abuse can leave lasting emotional scars. Words spoken in anger or contempt can pierce the heart like a sword.

2. Betrayal and Broken Trust

Betrayal is one of the most painful emotional experiences described in Scripture.

Psalm 55:12–14 (NKJV)
“For it is not an enemy who reproaches me… but it was you, a man my equal, my companion and my acquaintance.”

David describes the pain of being hurt by someone close. Betrayal by friends, family members, or trusted leaders can cause deep emotional trauma because trust has been violated.

3. Rejection and Abandonment

Feeling rejected or abandoned can deeply wound a person’s heart.

David expressed this experience when he wrote:

Psalm 27:10 (NKJV)
“When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me.”

Rejection from parents, family members, friends, or community can create deep emotional pain and feelings of worthlessness.

4. Injustice, Oppression, and Abuse

The Bible repeatedly acknowledges the suffering caused by oppression and mistreatment.

Ecclesiastes 4:1 (NKJV)
“Then I returned and considered all the oppression that is done under the sun: and look! The tears of the oppressed.”

People who experience injustice, exploitation, or abuse often carry emotional wounds from those experiences.

5. Loss, Grief, and Tragedy

Loss of loved ones, shattered dreams, or unexpected tragedy can deeply wound the heart.

When Lazarus died, Jesus Himself showed emotional grief.

John 11:35 (NKJV)
“Jesus wept.”

This simple verse shows that grief and emotional sorrow are natural responses to painful loss.

6. Fear and Distressing Experiences

Dangerous or frightening experiences can leave lasting emotional effects.

David wrote:

Psalm 56:3 (NKJV)
“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.”

Fear caused by traumatic situations such as violence, abuse, neglect, danger, or severe distress can create deep emotional struggles.

7. Delayed hope or repeated disappointments can cause deep emotional distress. Proverbs 13:12; “Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” NKJV

Like the father of the boy afflicted with the mute spirit, he suffered repeated disappointment. Medical science could not heal his son. Dark and occultic practices could not heal his son. In Mark 9:23, Jesus spoke a word that reached into the father’s deeply troubled inner state, an unseen emotional trauma formed through years of disappointment as every attempted healer failed to help his precious child. In the very next verse, the father responded in tears, openly admitting his inner struggle. Repeated disappointment over time had produced a mindset of unbelief, even while standing before the Son of God, who holds absolute power to heal and deliver.

4. Signs of Emotional Hurt in Scripture

The Bible also describes symptoms that resemble what we now call emotional trauma:

• Persistent sadness or grief
• Fear and anxiety
• Withdrawal or discouragement
• Bitterness or anger
• Loss of hope

5. The Bible Recognises the Reality of Inner Wounds

Scripture clearly shows that emotional wounds are real and significant.

Psalm 34:18 (NKJV)
“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.”

This verse acknowledges that people can have broken hearts, meaning deep inner pain. At the same time it reveals that God is close to those who are emotionally wounded.
