Understanding Sanctification
There has been some misconception about sanctification, as some people believe that once they are saved, there is nothing else to do because of grace.
Sanctification is the process by which a believer is set apart for God and transformed into Christlikeness. When we are saved, we are justified instantly by faith in Jesus Christ. However, sanctification is the daily walk where the Holy Spirit works in us to shape our thoughts, actions, and desires according to God’s will.

Therefore, you could say, our righteousness through Christ Jesus is “positional”, but sanctification is “progressive”
The Bible says,
“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord”
2 Corinthians 3:18 NKJV
The phrase “are being transformed” in English clearly communicates an ongoing, continuous, unfinished process. It means the transformation is happening right now, is active, and is still in progress
Here, Paul intentionally uses a present continuous form to show:
- Transformation (Sanctification) is not instant
- It is progressive
- It is ongoing
- It is the work of the Holy Spirit over time
Sanctification cannot be achieved by human effort alone. It is a cooperation between our obedience to God and His Word, and the work of the Holy Spirit.
Sanctification Aligns Us With God’s Will
Walking in sanctification keeps our lives aligned with God’s purposes. God desires a holy people who reflect His character in the world.
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification that you should abstain from sexual immorality”
1 Thessalonians 4:3 NKJV
When we walk in holiness, our lives begin to reflect God’s nature. Our choices become pleasing to Him, and our hearts become sensitive to His voice.
Sanctification Strengthens Our Relationship With God
Sin does not cancel a believer’s salvation unless their heart becomes so hardened that they completely reject the corrective voice of the Holy Spirit and the truth of God’s Word. However, unrepented sin will hinder their fellowship with God. It creates distance in relationship, not separation from His saving grace. And this is the beauty of progressive sanctification: sanctification removes the barriers that hinder intimacy with Him.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”
Matthew 5:8 NKJV
A sanctified life allows us to “see.” A sanctified life allows us to perceive spiritual dimensions and realities of God that others cannot discern. A sanctified life allows you to experience deep dimensions of God’s presence and glory. A sanctified life allows us to enjoy deeper communion with God through prayer, worship, and obedience to His Word and Will. Our conscience becomes tender, and our fellowship with Him becomes richer.
Sanctification Releases Spiritual Power and Authority
God uses clean vessels for honourable purposes. When we walk in sanctification, we position ourselves for divine use.
“Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work”
2 Timothy 2:21 NKJV
A sanctified believer is effective in spiritual warfare, service, and ministry because their life reflects God’s authority.
A believer who commit himself to daily sanctification by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and in partnership with God’s Word, wields a greater degree of authority in Christ Jesus than the causal believer. A sanctified believer is one whose prayer and faith-filled declarations carries greater force in the spirit realm.
Sanctification Protects Us From Spiritual Bondage
Living in holiness guards us from the destructive power of sin. Sanctification preserves our freedom in Christ.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
Romans 6:23 NKJV
As we walk in obedience, we experience peace, stability, and spiritual growth rather than guilt and bondage.
Sanctification Produces Lasting Fruit
A sanctified life results in visible fruit that glorifies God and blesses others.
“But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life”
Romans 6:22 NKJV
Holiness produces love, patience, discipline, and godly character. These fruits become a testimony of Christ in us.
Walking Daily in Sanctification
Sanctification is a daily choice to yield to the Holy Spirit. It involves renewing the mind through God’s Word, resisting sin, and walking in obedience.
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service”
Romans 12:1 NKJV
As we walk in sanctification, we experience spiritual growth, divine favour, and a life that glorifies God.
Dear friend, holiness is not a burden but a blessing that draws us closer to God and releases His power in our lives.
