Greed diverts our focus from God and places it on material gain, leading to spiritual emptiness. Greed is one of the reasons we have major problems in the world today. Teaching our Christian children about why greed is wrong from a biblical perspective is crucial for their character development and enhancing the formation of positive relationships as they grow-up into becoming Holy-Spirit filled adults.
What Is Greed?
Greed is an intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or possessions. It goes beyond money and can manifest in various forms, such as craving fame, attention, compliments, or material goods.
Greed is like an insatiable hunger, always wanting more and never satisfied.
Children often exhibit greediness due to various factors. Here are seven common things they tend to be greedy about:
Toys and Possessions:
Children desire new toys, gadgets, and possessions. The allure of shiny, colourful objects can lead to a sense of entitlement and wanting more.
Sweets and Treats:
Sugary snacks, chocolates, and treats are irresistible to kids. Their craving for sweets often surpasses moderation.
Attention and Affection:
Children seek attention, hugs, and validation. They may become possessive, wanting exclusive affection from parents, friends, or siblings.
Screen Time and Technology:
Tablets, video games, and smartphones captivate children. The desire for uninterrupted screen time can lead to greediness.
Food and Snacks:
Kids may insist on specific foods, snacks, or fast food. The desire for favourite meals can sometimes border on greed.
Stickers, Stamps, and Collectibles:
Children love collecting items like stickers, stamps, or trading cards. The desire to complete a collection can drive greed.
Special Occasions and Gifts:
During birthdays, holidays, or celebrations, children eagerly anticipate gifts. The desire for presents can sometimes overshadow the joy of the occasion.
Remember that children’s understanding of ownership and sharing is still developing. As Christian parents and caregivers, we can influence them toward gratitude, empathy, and a balanced perspective on material things
Biblical Perspective on Greed:
1 Timothy 6:10 states, “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” Greed disrupts God’s design for humanity to live in harmony, caring for one another.
Greed is a form of idolatry, placing possessions and wealth above God’s commandments and love.
It harms both the individual and the community, promoting selfishness over the well-being of others.
Bible Verses About Greed:
Proverbs 1:19 (NAS): “So are the ways of everyone who gains by violence; it takes away the life of its possessors.” Greed steals life and destroys.
Proverbs 21:25-26 (NIV): “The craving of a sluggard will be the death of him… but the righteous give without sparing.” Greed leads to death (spiritual death and the eventual destruction of loving relationships around the person walking in greed).
Ezekiel 22:12 (NAS): “You have injured your neighbors for gain by oppression, and you have forgotten Me.” Greed harms relationships and forgets God. Walking in greed separates you from the presence of God.
Jude 11: “Woe unto them! They have followed the path of Cain… and perished in the gainsaying of Core.” Greed leads to destruction.
Teaching Points for Children:
Contentment: Teach children to be content with what they have and appreciate God’s blessings.
Generosity: Encourage sharing, giving, and helping others. Show them examples of selflessness in your daily life-style as a parent.
Eternal Perspective: Remind them that earthly possessions are temporary, but our relationship with God and eternity matter more.
