The Lord of Host is most frequently used in Jeremiah (81 times) and Isaiah (61 times).
Also Prophet Elijah and Prophet Elisha confirmed their position as prophets by standing before the Lord of Host. They would use this expression when speaking to people, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand” (1 Kings 18:15, 2 Kings 3:14)
The Lord of Host is first used in 1 Samuel 1:3. (see verse below)
“This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there”. 1 Samuel 1:3 NKJV
Jehovah Sabaoth (yeh-ho-vaw’ se ba’ôt), which is the Jewish meaning for The Lord of Host (or The Lord of Power)
“Lord of Hosts” is a title, a position of authority that belongs to God alone for all eternity. No force, or power can wrestle or take that position of authority from Him.
The Lord of Host is a title that tells us His authority;
- That God has control over various forms of armies (both spiritual and physical). Jehovah Sabaoth can be translated as “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies” (1 Samuel 1:3 NLT). This name denotes His universal sovereignty over every army, both spiritual and the earthly army under the heaven’s.
- That God’s rules over every aspect of life. God’s title as Lord of Hosts is based on His power and sovereignty. (Colossians 1:16:17, For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together) ESV
God, as the Lord of Host controls the universe and all the heavenly bodies in it
Scientist tells us that we have a vast number of stars, and other heavenly bodies in the universe. Every natural entity that exists outside of the Earth’s atmosphere is referred to as a Celestial body. Heavenly bodies are another name for celestial bodies. Celestial bodies are the structures in our solar system, such as the sun, moon, planets, galaxies, meteorites, asteroids and numerous stars
Their numbering can be too great for the human mind to grasp. God controls all these vast innumerable heavenly bodies in the universe.
Isaiah 40:26, Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these heavenly bodies, The One who brings out their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one is missing. (AMP)
Humans will never be able to count the heavenly bodies in the universe in precise amounts because of how vast they are but God, The Lord of host, knows them by name and knows exactly how many there are in the universe because He created them, positioned them in different sectors of the universe as He will’s. Furthermore it His power that sustains them. Hence, as beautiful, and mysterious as these heavenly bodies are, they too depend on God for their existence.
As all the heavenly bodies were called the hosts of heaven. Jehovah being called Lord of this host showed that He is their Maker and Governor; and consequently He, not these heavenly bodies is to be worshipped. The sun, moon, planets, and stars are the highest objects of religious worship in some religion’s. However as believers we know that God, The Lord of Host, is the Lord of all these heavenly bodies and only him do we worship.
Deuteronomy 4:19; And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. (ESV)
NLT would use the expression “all the forces of heaven”. Meaning that not only are there heavenly bodies such as asteroids, meteorites, stars in the heavenly realm, there are also unseen forces in existence in the heavenly realm (such as divine spirits and dark spirits). Hence, whether they be heavenly bodies of physical or spiritual entities or forces that reside in the realm of the 2nd heaven, He has complete control over them and they are not to be worshipped.
In Revelations 22:9, “But he said, “No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers the prophets, as well as all who obey what is written in this book. Worship only God.”
The angel of God (an example of a heavenly host) told Apostle Peter only God is to be worshipped.
Just to reinforce the fact that all the host of heaven obey Him
1 Kings 22:19, Then Micaiah said, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing by, on His right hand and on His left.
From Micaiah visionary experience, He could see all the host of heaven or armies of heaven stand in submission to God at the left and right hand of The Lord of Host. Indicating God’s control over all the host of heaven
God as Lord of Host controls the angel-armies
Psalms 103:21; Yes, praise the Lord, you armies of angels who serve him and do his will! (NLT)
Jesus revealed Himself to Joshua as Commander of the Lord’s Army. Some translation would say Captain of The Lord’s Army or Prince of the Lord’s host
Joshua 5:14, “Neither one,” he replied. “I am the commander of the Lord’s army.” At this, Joshua fell with his face to the ground in reverence. “I am at your command,” Joshua said. “What do you want your servant to do?”
In 2 Kings 19:35, The Lord of Host sent one angel to help the children of Judah. This one angel killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night. One angel that the Lord of Host sent did so much damage to the enemies of His children, God by virtue of His title as Lord of Host can command “the heavens” to fight for you and give you victory without a sweat.
I decree over your life that the LORD OF HOST will fight for you and give you uncommon breakthroughs and favour in all aspects of your life in Jesus Name.
