Just because everyone in the world does it, will not make it right before God. And God warns us about emulating the practices of this world system as a true child of God. (Romans 12:2a. “Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world)
According to the Bible, the practice of contacting mediums is strictly forbidden and categorized with occultic practices throughout both the Old and New Testaments
Leviticus 19:31 states, “Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God”
Necromancy for those who may not know what it means is the use of magical sorcery to communicate with the dead by summoning their spirits as ghosts or visions for the purpose of divination; imparting the means to foretell future events; and discovery of hidden knowledge.
In the account of Saul and the Witch of Endor recorded in 1 Samuel 28:3-19, King Saul consulted a witch (medium) for direction when God refused to speak to him anymore due to his unrepentant disobedience to God, and he added more iniquity to his life by seeking a medium. God described his disobedience to Him and the seeking of a medium for direction as breaking faith with God.
1 Chronicles 10:13-14– “13 So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance. 14 He did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.”
If you as a believer go to seek a medium for whatever reason, God says you have broken faith with Him! and there may be dire consequences except you repent before Him.
The New Testament also affirms the sinfulness of psychics;
Galatians 5:19-21: “19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Apostle Paul gives a list of practices that people will engage in when they are not being led by the Holy Spirit. Sorcery is included in this list. So, you can never say the Holy-Spirit prompted you to go and see a Psychic because the Holy-Spirit will never go against what God says in His word.
Revelation 21:8– “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
Yet again, sorcery and those who practise it (which is used synonymously with psychics/mediums, etc) is evil.
Involvement with any form of sorcery, mediums, psychics, fortune telling, the occult and other forms of devilish manipulation that society these days call innocent will result in you ultimately loosing eternal life with God in Heaven.
Therefore, as believers who really love God and trust his goodness and depend on his sovereign power shun all practices of the occult and trust Him to give you the victory in life and reveal the deep mysteries of your life that will cause your destiny to flourish (1 John 5:4, 1 Corinthians 2:10)
