2. Jesus Depended Upon the Holy Spirit
Therefore, as followers of Christ, we too must depend upon the Holy Spirit.

Although Jesus was God manifested in the flesh, He did not begin His public ministry until He was anointed by the Holy Spirit. This reveals an important principle. Jesus chose to minister as the perfect Man in complete dependence upon the Holy Spirit, providing the pattern every believer is called to follow.
At His baptism, Jesus was publicly anointed before beginning His earthly ministry.
Luke 3:22; “And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him.” NKJV
Immediately afterwards, Scripture records,
Luke 4:1; “Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.” NKJV
Later we read,
Luke 4:14; “Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee.”
Notice the progression.
- Jesus was anointed by the Spirit.
- He was filled with the Spirit.
- He was led by the Spirit.
- He ministered in the power of the Spirit.
Peter later summarised Jesus’ entire ministry with these words.
Acts 10:38; “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”
Jesus did not rely upon human ability, natural wisdom, or independent strength. He chose to minister through the enabling power of the Holy Spirit.
If the sinless Son of God chose to live and minister this way, how much more should we?
The Christian life cannot be lived successfully through determination alone. Good intentions are not enough. Human wisdom has its limits. Personal discipline, while valuable, cannot produce spiritual transformation.
We need the Holy Spirit every day.
- He strengthens us when we are weak.
- He guides us when decisions are unclear.
- He convicts us when we begin to drift.
- He teaches us the truth of God’s Word.
- He comforts us in seasons of sorrow.
- He empowers us to live holy lives and equips us to fulfil God’s purpose.
Dependence upon the Holy Spirit is not reserved for pastors, missionaries, or church leaders. Every believer is called to cultivate a daily relationship with Him.
Practically, this means beginning each day by inviting His leadership, listening to His promptings, responding quickly to His convictions, and relying upon His strength rather than your own abilities. The more we yield to the Holy Spirit, the more the character of Christ is formed within us.
3. Jesus Depended Upon Prayer
Therefore, as followers of Christ, we too must cultivate a lifestyle of prayer.
One of the clearest patterns throughout the Gospels is Jesus’ consistent commitment to prayer.
Before making important decisions, during demanding seasons of ministry, after performing miracles, and in moments of intense pressure, Jesus intentionally withdrew to spend time alone with His Father.
Mark 1:35; “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” NKJV
Jesus was undoubtedly the busiest and most influential leader of His generation. Crowds constantly surrounded Him. People sought Him for healing, teaching, deliverance, and counsel. Yet despite these demands, He never allowed ministry to replace intimacy with the Father.
Prayer was not simply something Jesus practised. Prayer was His way of life. Prayer sustained His ministry. Prayer strengthened Him during weakness.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, prayer prepared Him to embrace the Father’s will even when the cross lay before Him. His private surrender in prayer produced His public victory at Calvary. The triumph of the cross was preceded by the travail of the garden.
The same principle applies to every covenant child of God. Public victory is the fruit of private communion with God.
We must never allow the responsibilities of family, work, education, ministry, or success to crowd out our fellowship with the Lord. The busier life becomes, the greater our need for prayer.
Prayer is where dependence upon God is cultivated.
- Prayer acknowledges that we cannot successfully live the Christian life in our own strength.
- Prayer declares that God’s wisdom is greater than ours.
- Prayer positions our hearts to receive His guidance, peace, strength, and direction.
In many ways, prayer is the practical expression of humility.
Prayerlessness is pride before God. Prayerlessness often reveals self-dependence. It quietly assumes that we can manage life without continually seeking God.
Prayerfulness is humility before God. Prayerfulness reveals a heart that recognises its constant need for Him.
Key-points:
- The less we pray, the easier it becomes to rely upon ourselves.
- The more we pray, the more deeply we recognise our need for God’s wisdom, strength, grace, and power.

4. Jesus Depended Upon God’s Word
Therefore, our lives must also be built upon the authority of God’s Word.
Whenever Jesus encountered temptation, opposition, confusion, or spiritual conflict, He consistently turned to the Scriptures.
When Satan tempted Him in the wilderness, Jesus did not respond with personal opinion, intellectual debate, or emotional determination.
He answered every temptation with the same declaration.
Matthew 4:4; “But He answered and said, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” NKJV
Jesus resisted Satan by standing firmly upon the written Word of God.
This teaches us an important spiritual principle. The devil is not overcome through human reasoning or emotional resolve. He is resisted through faith in God’s Word. Every temptation, every lie, and every attack must be confronted with the authority of Scripture.
When believers declare God’s Word with genuine faith, they are not reciting empty words. They are agreeing with God’s Word and bringing their hearts, minds, and circumstances under His authority.
Throughout His ministry, Jesus continually appealed to Scripture because He lived under its authority.
●When He cleansed the temple, He declared,
Matthew 21:13; “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.'” NKJV
Jesus used Scripture to confront spiritual pollution.
Likewise, whenever you desire God to remove any form of spiritual pollution in your life, your family, your church, or your community, engage and declare God’s Word with faith, confidence.
●When Jesus entered the synagogue at Nazareth, He read from Isaiah 61 to define and reveal His divine purpose on earth and also meet the spiritual needs of the people. (Please study Luke 4:17–21)
After reading the prophecy, He declared in Luke 4:21; “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” NKJV
Jesus understood His identity and purpose through the Scriptures.
In the same way, we discover our identity, calling, and divine assignment by immersing ourselves in God’s Word. The world cannot reveal God’s purpose for your life. Social media cannot reveal it. Popular culture cannot reveal it. Only the One who created you can reveal why you were created, and He does so through His Word by the Holy Spirit.
After Jesus read Isaiah 61 to the people, He said today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. Teaching us that it is the only the Word of God that brings fulfilment to our lives. It is only God’s Word that can meet all our spiritual needs (not social media or human or demonic principles)
●When questioned about the Sabbath, Jesus again answered with Scripture.
Matthew 12:3-7 records that He referred to the lives of David and the prophet Hosea to correct false thinking and reveal God’s heart.
This reminds us that God’s Word continually renews our minds. It corrects wrong beliefs, purifies our motives, exposes deception, and reshapes our values according to the mind of Christ.
For this reason, we must cultivate a daily dependence upon Scripture.
The Bible is far more than a book to be admired or occasionally consulted. It is God’s living voice to His people. It nourishes our faith, directs our decisions, strengthens our convictions, renews our thinking, and equips us to fulfil His purpose.
As Jesus built His earthly life upon the authority of God’s Word, so must we. A believer whose life is anchored in Scripture will remain steady in uncertainty, discerning in confusion, courageous in spiritual conflict, and fruitful in every season because God’s Word provides an unchanging foundation upon which to build.
Altar call: For anyone reading this article who is not saved and wants to be part of the family of God or you want to re-dedicate your life back to Jesus, please repeat this out loud. “Lord Jesus, I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my old ways and ask You to forgive me. Come into my heart, be my Lord and Saviour. Fill me with Your Spirit and help me live for You. Thank You for saving me, in Jesus Name. Amen“
Prayer: Every distraction of the world and strategy of darkness to shift me from dependence to independence from God, be destroyed now by the fire of the Holy Ghost, in Jesus Name
