Scripture Reflection

Acts 19:17; “This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.” NKJV

There is a clear biblical pattern throughout Scripture. God actively supports and works through anything that exalts the name of Jesus. When Christ is lifted up, heaven responds, the Holy Spirit moves, and hearts are drawn toward conviction and transformation.

In Acts 19, the magnifying of the name of Jesus marked a turning point in Ephesus. The people witnessed the power of God, and the result was not entertainment or curiosity. It was reverence. Fear fell upon them, not as terror, but as a deep awareness of God’s holiness. This led to repentance, change, and a turning away from practices that did not honour God.

This principle is rooted in the very mission of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said in John 16:14 NKJV “He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.”

The work of the Holy Spirit is always centred on making Jesus known and exalted. Wherever Jesus is truly lifted up, the Holy Spirit is active. Dear reader, one of the ways to increase the activity of the Holy Spirit in your life is to be intentional about exalting the name of Jesus in your everyday moments. This can look like thanking Him aloud, choosing Christlike responses, sharing His goodness with someone, praying before decisions, or honouring Him in your conversations and attitudes. As you consistently lift Jesus high, the Holy Spirit presence and power become more evident.

This also explains why the early church experienced such remarkable power and impact. Their message was not built around personalities, systems, or human achievement. It was centred entirely on Christ.

With all humility, I write this: the church in our modern time must return to the blueprint of the early church. Whatever we do in the pulpit and outside of it must be anchored in Christ alone. We cannot afford to build empires, chase names, or pursue money while leaving Jesus out of the message, and more importantly, out of our hearts. When Christ is central, the Holy Spirit moves freely; when He is sidelined, the power disappears

In Acts 4:12 NKJV, it is declared, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

The name of Jesus was their primary focus, and God confirmed that message with tremendous power.

The same principle applies today. God does not back everything that is impressive or popular. He backs what brings glory to His Son. When the focus shifts from Christ to self, recognition, or personal agendas, the spiritual impact weakens. But when Jesus is lifted up in truth and sincerity, there is a release of divine activity and power.

Jesus Himself said in John 12:32 NKJV, “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.”

Dear friend, this reveals that the drawing power belongs to Him. It is not the ability of a speaker, the strength of a program, or the appeal of an event that ultimately changes lives. It is the exaltation of Jesus that draws people and transforms hearts.

As I write this, I too am still learning in Christ Jesus but this truth carries practical implications for believers and leaders.

In preaching, teaching, and ministry, the central question is not how to impress people or build a name for yourself, but how to reveal Christ.

In daily living, the focus is not on self‑promotion or self‑gratification, but on reflecting the character and nature of Jesus Christ. This is expressed through our attitude, our speech, our behaviour, and the way we relate to people in every sphere of life. When Christ is exalted in these everyday moments, His presence becomes visible through us, and it is a sign that the Holy Spirit is increasingly active in our lives.

Colossians 3:17 NKJV says, “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

This means every aspect of life can become a platform that magnifies Him.

When Jesus is magnified, several things happen:

  • Conviction increases because people see truth more clearly.
  • Repentance follows because hearts recognise the need for change.
  • Transformation begins because the Holy Spirit is at work in our hearts.
  • The power of God for miracles, deliverance, healing, signs and wonders is undeniably evident among us

Acts 19 shows that when the name of Jesus is honoured, lives are changed and communities are impacted. This is not limited to a specific time or place. It is a continuing principle.

God backs what glorifies Jesus. When His name is lifted high, heaven responds, the Holy Spirit moves, and people are drawn to Him.

Altar call: For anyone reading this article who is not saved and wants to be part of the family of God or you want to re-dedicate your life back to Jesus, please repeat this out loud. “Lord Jesus, I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my old ways and ask You to forgive me. Come into my heart, be my Lord and Saviour. Fill me with Your Spirit and help me live for You. Thank You for saving me, in Jesus Name. Amen

Prayer: Father, remove selfish ambition, greed and conceitedness in me. Please help me that in all I do, in actions, thoughts, speech and behaviour that Christ Jesus is lifted high, in Jesus Name
