“Limitations weaken when a believer understands who they are in Christ” fear of the enemy, fear of man, fear of witches, fear of the unknown, doubt, uncertainty, problems weaken when you truly know who you are in Christ
And as a covenant child of God through Christ, you have been given delegated divine authority by Christ Jesus. Luke 10:19; “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

Considering the story about how the wind and wave obey Jesus in Mark 4:35-40, we will expand on some of the verses in this story
Vs 39; “Then He arose and rebuked the wind…”
The original Greek word used for the word rebuke is “epitimáō”
It can mean:
- to rebuke sharply
- to command with authority
- to restrain or silence something hostile
In Mark 4:39, Jesus was not “scolding” the wind. He exercised divine authority, issuing a command that creation must obey.
Why is this important? Jesus speaks to the storm the same way He speaks to demons in other passages. The same verb epitimáō is used when He rebukes demons in other passages.
This shows us:
- The storm was not just natural weather; it was contrary forces, demonic powers resisting His mission.
- Jesus addressed the demonic forces trying to resist His mission with divine authority of the Creator.
- His rebuke produced instant calm, revealing His absolute sovereignty over both the spirit realm (the wind) and the physical realm (the sea).
What other things can we learn?
- The spirit realm controls the physical realm. Vs 37; “And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling”
The wind (which we cannot see) influenced the sea (what we can see) to become boisterous and violent
- If you deal with the matter at the level of the spirit realm then the physical realm must follow suite. Vs 39c; “…And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”
Note that when the wind ceased, the effect was great calm (of the sea). When you uproot the spiritual strong-man behind the problem you are facing then there will be great calm in your physical life
- Jesus taught us in this story, that the physical realm also respond to the spoken words of God.
Vs39b; “…and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!…”
Jesus spoke to the sea symbolic of the physical realm: the things we can see, sense, touch and feel. Jesus spoke with divine authority to the sea, “peace be still”. What does that mean for us as believers?
-your body respond to words; if your body is sick speak God’s word of healing over it
-your mind respond to words; so if your mind is tormented with fear or doubt, take captive of those tormenting thoughts through God’s Word and cast them out. Begin to speak and feed your mind with God’s Word
-your finances respond to words, if your finances is sick, speak God’s word of abundance over it
-your marriage respond to words, if there are problems in your marriage, become a prophet over your marriage and speak God’s words of joy and peace over your marriage
Remember, God told Moses, speak to the rock (Numbers 20:8b; … Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals. NKJV)
The physical realm, physical realities like the rock will respond to God’s word spoken with understanding and from a position of knowing your identity in Christ
Jesus, also says, we have the authority to overthrow any physical reality that contradicts God’s Will by speaking God’s word in faith and power. (Mark 11:23; “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” NKJV)
But you must speak to those mountains in your life. not speaking sentimentally, not speaking from the position of fear or defeat, but speak God’s word with boldness and power
- There is absolute power in God’s Word: The demonic realm and their activities which are unseen to the naked eye respond and must obey God’s Word declared from a person who knows that they carry divine authority
Read Matthew 8:16-17; “16 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.”
But Notice vs 16; “And He cast out the spirits with a word…” so, when a demon or human agent of darkness hears God’s Word spoken in confession or prayer from a person who knows their identity in Christ Jesus, who understands the power backing the name of Jesus, they must obey.
When you speak God’s Word with understanding and from a position of knowing who you are in Christ, if there be any oppressive spirit behind any situation you are facing, God’s Word will terminate their influence and activity over your life.
When you begin to fill your inner life with God’s Word through diligent Bible meditation, the light in God’s Word will cast out any dark power in your life that has held you in bondage.
Final Remark
So, when you as a covenant child of God who has been given delegated authority through Christ Jesus, surrendered to God, speaks His Words in faith or pray with faith; demonic influences over your life, family or territory must flee!
Altar call: For anyone reading this article who is not saved and wants to be part of the family of God or you want to re-dedicate your life back to Jesus, please repeat this out loud. “Lord Jesus, I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my old ways and ask You to forgive me. Come into my heart, be my Lord and Saviour. Fill me with Your Spirit and help me live for You. Thank You for saving me, in Jesus Name. Amen“
Prayer: The victory, the favour, the lifting that should be mine that the enemy has suppressed and hijacked, I recover them now by the fire of God, in Jesus Name
