More strategies to stop the thief and his schemes.

2. Standing on God’s Word and Truth

The devil often tries to steal, kill, and destroy by distorting truth and introducing lies. Jesus emphasized the power of God’s Word to stop the devil’s plans.

Matthew 4:4:
“But He answered and said, ‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” NKJV

When Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness, He overcame by quoting Scripture, “it is written.” This shows us the importance of knowing and applying God’s Word to counter the lies and deceptions of the enemy.

  • Ephesians 6:17 (NKJV);
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

The Word of God is called the “sword of the Spirit,” a weapon believers can use to defend themselves from the enemy’s attacks and to overcome his schemes.

A perfect example is observed in Matthew 4:1-11: When Jesus is tempted by Satan in the wilderness, He counters each temptation with Scripture, striking back against the enemy’s ploys with the truth of God’s Word.

Jesus shows us here that the Word of God is the perfect weapon to use in order to ward-off and defeat the schemes of the enemy

While the Word of God serves to defend against spiritual attacks—warding off deception and temptation—God’s Word is also an offensive weapon.

By proclaiming and applying God’s Word, believers can challenge and dismantle the lies and strongholds of the enemy, advance their faith and spread the gospel.

Some example of bible verses and bible cases that depict God’s Word as an offensive weapon

Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword…” This verse emphasizes its piercing ability to judge thoughts and intentions, reflecting its penetrating power.

Jeremiah 23:29: “Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” This verse highlights the Word’s ability to demolish strongholds and falsehoods.

-In Acts 13:6-12, Paul confronts Elymas the sorcerer (also known as Bar-Jesus) who was trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith. Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, declares that Elymas will be blind for a time. Immediately, mist and darkness come over him, and he gropes about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. This act not only demonstrates the authority and power of God’s Word but also serves as a direct offensive strike against opposition to the gospel. It’s a vivid illustration of the spiritual authority believers can wield through faith.

-Another potent example is in 2 Kings 1:9-14. Elijah calls down fire from heaven to consume two groups of soldiers sent by King Ahaziah to arrest him. This demonstrates the fiery and decisive power of God’s word through the prophet.

These cases show that God’s word and His instructions lead directly to victory and deliverance, acting as formidable offensive weapons in times of conflict

  • Stay Vigilant and Prayerful; 1 Peter 5:8-9a warns, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith.”

In 2 Kings 6:18, Elisha prays for God to strike the Syrian army with blindness when they come to capture him. God answers his prayer, and the entire army is rendered blind.

This act shows that prayer serves as a powerful offensive weapon against enemies that rage against us.

When you combine the might and authority of God’s word in the place of prayer. It makes your prayer powerful and effective which will avail much (produces tremendous results) James 5:16.

When your prayer lines up to God’s word, which is His will, then you can be assured that God has heard you and you will have what you request (1 John 5:14-15)

When you use God’s word in the place of prayer, you will stop the activities of the enemy against your life, family and nation.

Second example is noted in Joshua 10:12-14: Joshua prays for the sun and moon to stand still so the Israelites can continue fighting their enemies. God answers, and the sun stops in the middle of the sky, allowing them to achieve a decisive victory.

Through Prayer, Joshua commanded the elements of God’s creation (the sun and moon) to work in their favour, in order for their enemies to be defeated.

As believers we can in the place of prayer enforce victory over every enemy or situations that are contrary to God’s will over our life.

Third example; 2 Kings 19:14-19: King Hezekiah prays for deliverance when Jerusalem is threatened by the Assyrian army. His prayer leads to God sending an angel to strike down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, saving the city.

This verse also shows how through prayer God can send angelic intervention to stop the plots of the enemy against us

These instances highlight the powerful role of prayer as an active and transformative force in spiritual battles.

Consider some more bible verses that illustrate the potency of prayer in stopping the thief:

Psalms 7:6; “Arise, O Lord, in Your anger; Lift Yourself up because of the rage of my enemies; Rise up for me to the judgment You have commanded!”

Psalms 18:3, “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.”

Psalms 56:9; “When I cry out to You, Then my enemies will turn back; This I know, because God is for me.”

Psalm 34:17: “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.”

Psalm 50:15: “Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

God bless you
