5. Letting Go of the Past

The verse in Isaiah 43:18-19 emphasizes the importance of not dwelling on the past. Letting go of past failures, hurts, and disappointments allows God to do something new in your life.

  • Lot’s Wife: Lot’s wife looked back at Sodom, longing for the past, and she turned into a pillar of salt. This serves as a warning to not cling to the past when God is leading you to a new beginning.
    • Luke 17:32-33: “Remember Lot’s wife. Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.”

How about past successes?

Apart from past hurts and failures, you must let go of past victories and achievements if you want God to do something new and better in your life.

While you should not downplay the achievements that God helped you attain, continue to thank Him for those past successes. However, holding on to them too tightly, just like past hurts, will hinder you from entering the new level God wants for you. No matter your current success, there is always a greater level that God wants you to reach, whether in life, destiny, or ministry. Paul’s life is a testament to this principle. Despite his significant achievements as one highly trained in Jewish law and influential in that field, he chose to leave them behind to pursue a higher and more glorious calling in Christ (Philippians 3:13-14)

Philippians 3:13-14: “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus”

6. Expectation and Hope

A preacher once said, “Expectation breeds manifestation.” This principle holds true when we are seeking God for a new beginning. If you have no expectation that God can bring new beginnings in your life, then do not expect Him to move in your life or situation.

Having an expectant heart and hope in God’s promises positions believers to receive new beginnings. God responds to our expectations and hope in Him.

  • The Woman with the Issue of Blood: Her expectation that Jesus could heal her if she just touched His garment was the trigger for her miraculous healing.
    • Mark 5:28-29: “For she said, ‘If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.’ Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.”

Summary

The triggers for God to bring a new beginning in a believer’s life include:

  1. Faith,
  2. Repentance,
  3. Obedience,
  4. Persistent prayer,
  5. Letting go of the past, and
  6. Having an expectant heart.

When these elements are present, God’s promise to make “a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert” becomes a reality, transforming defeat into victory, sorrow into joy, suffering into freedom, and poverty into abundance.
