Question: How can I teach my children about obediance from a biblical perspective?

There are many excellent stories in the bible that one could use as a template to instruct our children on the virtues of obedience. Let us consider the narrative of Jehonadab and the Rechabites in Jeremiah 35: 1-19; as it provides valuable lessons about obedience to God and parents. We will do a quick summary of the bible story:

Background:

Jehonadab (Jonadab) was an ancestor of the Rechabites, a nomadic tribe.

He instructed his descendants to live in tents, avoid cultivating the land, and abstain from wine.

The Rechabites faithfully followed these commands even when they settled in Jerusalem.

Lesson Points:

Obedience to God: Just as the Rechabites obeyed Jehonadab’s instructions, we should obey God’s commands. God desires our faithfulness and obedience.

Respecting Parents Wisdom, Instructions and Rules: Teach children to honour the wisdom taught by parents. Jehonadab’s rules to his children and descendants were meant to preserve their way of life and faithfulness. In a similar fashion, instruction from parents are meant to develop godly virtues in children

Obedience to parents attracts God’s blessings: God honoured and blessed the descendant Rechabites for obeying the commands of their father (Jehonadab). God said: ‘Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before Me forever.’” Children who honour and obey their parents attract blessings from God. Conversely, when we choose to walk in persistent disobedience to God and parents, it will attract consequences from God and from parents

Prioritizing God’s Will: The Rechabites chose their ancestral customs over convenience. Discuss with children how we prioritize God’s will over worldly desires.

Temple Witness: God instructed Jeremiah to bring the Rechabites to the temple. Their example was witnessed by priests, leaders, and people associated with the temple. Similarly, our obedience impacts others. When children who love Jesus live in obedience it becomes a testimony to those unsaved around them that they are truly children of God.

Application of story to children:

  1. Encourage children to listen to God’s Word and follow it faithfully.
  2. Discuss scenarios where obedience to parents aligns with God’s will.
  3. Highlight that obedience isn’t just about rules; it reflects our love for God.

Remember, the Rechabites’ unwavering obedience serves as a powerful example for us all (even adults)!

Teaching children about obedience is essential in our modern-day society where showing respect to parents and trusted adults like teachers is becoming rare. Here are some practical ways to instil the value of obedience in your children:

  1. Lead by Example: Children learn by observing their parents and caregivers. Be a role model by demonstrating obedience to rules, respecting authority, and following family guidelines consistently.
  2. Clear Expectations: Set clear expectations and boundaries. Explain why certain rules exist and how they contribute to safety, order, and well-being. When children understand the reasons behind rules, they’re more likely to comply.
  3. Positive Reinforcement: Praise and reward obedience. When your child follows instructions or behaves well, acknowledge it with specific praise. For example, “I appreciate how you cleaned up your toys without being asked!”
  4. Consequences: Teach children that actions have consequences. If they disobey, calmly explain the repercussions. Consistency is crucial—follow through with appropriate consequences when needed.
  5. Age-Appropriate Discussions: Tailor your conversations to your child’s age. Younger children benefit from simple explanations, while older ones can engage in deeper discussions about values and character.
  6. Storytelling: Share stories (like the one about Jehonadab) that highlight obedience and its positive outcomes. Use relatable examples from everyday life to reinforce the message.
  7. Empathy and Understanding: Sometimes children resist because they don’t fully understand or feel heard. Listen to their perspective, empathize, and discuss alternatives. Encourage open communication.
  8. Involve Them in Decision-Making: As children grow, involve them in family decisions. When they feel their opinions matter, they’re more likely to cooperate willingly.
  9. Prayer and Faith: As a parent who believes in Jesus Christ, teach your children about obedience to God’s commands. Pray together, emphasizing the importance of listening to God’s guidance.
  10. Consistency and Patience: Obedience is a lifelong lesson. Be patient, correct gently, and celebrate progress. Remember that teaching obedience is about nurturing character, not just compliance.

By incorporating these strategies and also embedding the values of Christ through His word, you’ll help your children understand the blessings that come from obedience to God and parents, and also prepare them for a positive and respectful life journey

Altar call: For anyone reading this article who is not saved and wants to be part of the family of God or you want to re-dedicate your life back to Jesus, please repeat this out loud. “Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I have sinned against you. Lord Jesus forgive me of my sins. I repent of my sins. Lord Jesus come into my life and be my Lord now and forever in Jesus Name
