Speaking in tongues, from a Biblical perspective, is a fascinating topic to engage children with from personal expereince as they come up with very unique view points on this topic.

What is Speaking in Tongues?

Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift bestowed by the Holy Spirit. It enables a believer in Christ to speak in an unknown language directly to God.

This language is divine and not a known, natural language from this earth. When someone speaks in tongues, they communicate mysteries directly to God, and only the Holy Spirit can interpret it.

Biblical Purposes of Speaking in Tongues:

Speaking Mysteries Directly to God: When a person speaks in tongues, they address God in a unique way. It’s a form of intimate communication that transcends human understanding.

Edification for the Speaker: Speaking in tongues builds up the individual spiritually. It’s like a personal conversation with God that brings refreshment and rest.

Entering into Rest: Quoting Isaiah 28:11-12, the Apostle Paul explains that speaking in tongues is the rest and refreshing by which God causes believers to rest. It’s a divine connection that brings peace and renewal.

Practical Application:

  • When teaching children about speaking in tongues, emphasize its spiritual nature. Explain that it’s a gift from God to help believers connect with Him.
  • Prayer: They can pray to God to recieve this gift. James 4:2b; “You do not have, because you do not ask.” Teach them to ask God in prayer for this gift, and God will certainly give it to them.
  • Encourage them to seek the Holy Spirit’s presence and be open to receiving this gift as it is open for every believer in Jesus Christ to recieve and not just for pastors or prophets.

Remember, the Bible encourages us to desire spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 14:1). Whether or not one speaks in tongues, the more important key is to seek a deeper relationship with God and allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives. However, speaking in tongues can also assist you to grow deeply in the things of God as you combine it with the study and meditation of God’s word.
