5. The Epistles: Faith That Works Through Love
Galatians 5:6 – “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.”
Paul shows that true faith is active, not passive. When faith is real, it works—especially through love.
James 2:17 – “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
James affirms that saving faith (right relationship) will necessarily express itself in actions of obedience and godly living.
6. The Role of God’s Word in Right Living
We cannot live right before God, without knowing the word of God and living by it
Romans 12:2; “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Our mind, a component of our soul cannot be renewed except by God’s word.
James 1:21; “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls”
Save: Root Verb: σῴζω (sōzō). To save, deliver, or protect. Often used in the New Testament to describe both eternal salvation and deliverance from danger or harm
The word ψυχὰς (psychas) for “souls” refers to the whole person—mind, will, and emotions—not just the immaterial part. So the verse implies that the implanted Word of God has the power to transform, deliver and preserve the whole person, not just offer eternal salvation but also deliverance from the destructive effects of sin in daily life.
Psalm 119:11:
- Your word I have treasured and stored in my heart, That I may not sin against You. (AMP)
- I always keep your message in my mind, so that I do not do anything bad against you. (EASY)
If you are in right relationship with God, you will desire and want to store up God’s word in your inner mind. If you are going to live a life that is right before God, you will need to always keep God’s word in your mind, so that you do not be out of alignment with God.
7. The Role of the Holy Spirit in Right Living
The moment we gave our lives to God we had the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, it is the Holy Spirit Who enables us to live righteously.
2 Corinthains 3:18; “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” NKJV
Romans 8:13–14 – “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
Living in step with the Spirit is both evidence and outcome of being a child of God.
Galatians 5:22–23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
These are not human efforts, but the natural outflow of a Spirit-governed life in relationship with God.
7. Summary & Practical Implications
a. Salvation and sanctification are inseparable
- Justification (legal righteousness) must lead to sanctification (practical righteousness).
b. True relationship with God transforms all of life
- Speech, thoughts, choices, relationships, and values all begin to align with God’s Word.
c. Living rightly is not to earn God’s favour, but to express it
- We do not live rightly to be accepted by God, but because we are already accepted.
Conclusion
Right relationship with God is not merely an internal belief or profession of faith; it produces visible, holy, and obedient living. Our walk must match our talk. The consistent testimony of Scripture is that those who truly know God will reflect His character in how they live.
1 John 3:7 – “Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.”
In the end, right living is the evidence, not the basis, of a right relationship with God.
