In Ephesians 6:11-13; from a bible and metaphoric view, the whole amor of God in spiritual ware-fare seems to protect our “front”, but our “back” is exposed. Therefore, what do we do as Christians in order not to expose our “back” to the enemy?

While the imagery in Ephesians 6:11-13 focuses primarily on the front-facing armor, it’s crucial to understand that spiritual warfare encompasses all directions, including our spiritual “back.” As Christians, guarding our backs in the spiritual realm involves several key principles:

  1. Stay Alert and Vigilant:
    • Ephesians 6:18a: “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.”
    • This weapon of praying at all times in the Spirit is a very potent weapon that not only covers our “spiritual-back” but we use it dismantle the operations of very wicked spirits in the heavenly realm.
    • We must maintain constant communication with God through prayer, remaining vigilant and alert to the enemy’s tactics. Prayer keeps us spiritually attuned and strengthens our connection with God, enabling us to discern and address threats from all directions.
    • Praying in the Spirit also implies speaking in tongues. 1 Corinthians 14:14; For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit [by the Holy Spirit within me] prays, but my mind is unproductive [it bears no fruit and helps nobody]. AMPC

When we speak in the spirit (speak in tongues) we speak mysteries to God and the Holy-Spirit helps us pray in line with the mind of God the Father in Heaven. When we pray in the understanding, we are limited to our sense realm but when we pray in tongues, the Holy-Spirit in us, prays through our spirit and we speak mysteries to God. These mysteries will include things we are not even physically aware of that needs God’s intervention. This is how we keep our back covered

  1. Be Surrounded by Fellow Believers:
    • Ecclesiastes 4:12: “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
    • As part of the body of Christ, we find strength and protection in unity with other believers. By surrounding ourselves with fellow Christians, we create a spiritual support system that helps safeguard our backs and provides accountability and encouragement in times of trial.
  2. Cultivate Discernment and Wisdom:
    • Proverbs 4:6-7: “Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” (ESV)
    • Cultivating discernment and wisdom through the continuous study of God’s Word equips us to recognize and avoid spiritual pitfalls. By continually seeking God’s guidance and understanding, we can make wise decisions that safeguard our spiritual well-being.
  3. Flee from Temptation and Sin:
    • 1 Corinthians 10:13b: “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (ESV)
    • When faced with temptation or spiritual attack, we must flee from sin and seek refuge in God’s strength and grace. By resisting temptation and avoiding situations that compromise our faith, we protect ourselves from attacks on our spiritual “back.”
  4. Cloak Ourselves in God’s Promises:
    • Psalm 91:4: “He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.”
    • By meditating on God’s promises and trusting in His faithfulness, we find refuge and protection in His presence. Cloaked in the assurance of His love and care, we can face spiritual battles with confidence, knowing that God is our ultimate defender.

In summary, while the armor of God emphasizes protection against frontal attacks in spiritual warfare, as Christians, we safeguard our spiritual “backs” through prayer, speaking in tongues, fellowship, discernment, avoidance of sin, and trust in God’s promises. By remaining vigilant and relying on God’s strength, we can stand firm against the enemy’s schemes from all directions.
