Question: What are some of the steps I can take to begin speaking in tongues?

Speaking in tongues is a spiritual practice that holds deep spiritual significance and benefit for the believer in God’s Kingdom. Here are some steps that you should consider if you’re interested in experiencing this gift of the Holy-Spirit:

  1. You have to be Born-again (Receive Jesus Christ as Your Lord and Savior): Before delving into speaking in tongues, it’s essential to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Accept Him as your Savior and invite Him into your life. Repentance and belief in the Gospel are foundational steps to receiving the Holy Spirit.
  2. Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Speaking in tongues is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit. To begin, you must receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised that believers would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 1:8). This power includes spiritual gifts, and speaking in tongues is one of them. Seek this baptism through prayer and openness to the Holy Spirit’s work.
  3. Understand That the Gift of Tongues Is for Every Believer: Jesus emphasized that believers would speak in new tongues (Mark 16:17). It’s a sign for all followers of Christ, not just pastors, prophets or apostles. Recognize that this gift is available to you and that you can recieve it.
  4. Thank God for the Gift: Begin by thanking God for giving you the ability to speak in tongues. Praise Him and express gratitude in the understanding (your native language). As you discern certain sounds rising from your spirit, be bold and start speaking them out.
  5. Create the Right Mindset: Focus your mind on God and the Holy Spirit within you. Speaking in tongues requires strong faith. Cultivate an atmosphere of trust and openness to receive this gift.
  6. Practice and Persist: Like any skill, speaking in tongues improves with practice. Have faith and open your mouth to make syllables as inspired by the Holy-Spirit, and allow the Holy-Spirit in you to pray through your spirit producing utterances that may seem unusual and unfamiliar to your mind. Speak it out boldly in faith. Don’t be discouraged if you have no utterances yet; keep believing, it will come by the power of the Holy-Spirit.

I hope this answers your question but always remember that speaking in tongues is a personal and spiritual experience in Christ Jesus. Seek guidance from your faith community (local church), study relevant scriptures, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you.

God bless you
