Text: Genesis 11:7; “Let’s go down and confuse their language. Then they will not understand each other.” (ERV)
The impact of miscommunication can be seen in the narrative of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11): In the story of the Tower of Babel, humans decided to build a tower that would reach the heavens for selfish and prideful reasons. However, God intervened by confusing their language, causing them not to understand one another. As a result, they were scattered across the earth because their communication line with each other was severely and irreversibly broken. Herein lies the serious impact of miscommunication in any marriage. Miscommunication in marriage is indeed a significant factor contributing to marital breakdown. When couples struggle to effectively communicate, it can lead to misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and unresolved conflicts. Here are some points to consider:
- Unmet Expectations: Miscommunication often arises from unmet expectations. When spouses assume the other person understands their needs or desires without explicitly expressing them, it can lead to disappointment and frustration.
- Different Communication Styles: People have varying communication styles. Some may be more direct, while others prefer subtle hints. When these styles clash, it can create confusion and misinterpretations.
- Emotional Expression: Couples may struggle to express their emotions openly. Bottling up feelings or avoiding difficult conversations can strain the relationship.
- Assumptions and Mind Reading: Assuming that your partner knows what you’re thinking or feeling can lead to misunderstandings. Your spouse may be full of the Holy-Spirit but they are not mind readers, and it’s essential for you to express thoughts and emotions clearly.
- Listening Skills: Active listening is crucial for effective communication. Sometimes, spouses may not truly listen to each other, leading to miscommunication.
- Conflict Resolution: Miscommunication can escalate into conflicts. If couples don’t learn healthy conflict resolution techniques, issues remain unresolved, causing tension.
- Technology and Distractions: In today’s digital age, distractions like smartphones and social media can hinder communication. Couples need to prioritize quality time together without distractions.
Remember that miscommunication isn’t always intentional; it can result from differences in upbringing, cultural backgrounds, or personal experiences. To improve communication in marriage:
- Practice Active Listening: Truly listen to your spouse’s words and feelings without interrupting or formulating your response.
- Be Clear and Specific: Avoid vague statements. Instead, express your needs, feelings, and expectations explicitly.
- Seek Help: If communication challenges persist, consider Christian couples therapy or counselling by a godly pastor in your church. They can guide you by the help of the Holy-Spirit in improving communication patterns.
Remember that every relationship is unique, and addressing miscommunication requires effort from both partners. Open dialogue, empathy, and a willingness to learn and adapt are essential for a healthy marriage
Miscommunication in marriage can lead to confusion, division, and unintended consequences. As believers in a godly marriage, you must make the Holy-Spirit the centre of your marriage, because it is only through His help and leading that we are able to communicate with love, clarity, and wisdom to our spouse.
God bless you
