Proverbs 17:17 (NKJV) tells us, “A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.”

“A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.” (NLT)

This means that a true friend is someone who loves you no matter what and is there for you even when times are hard.

The Friendship of Jonathan and David

One of the best examples of true friendship in the Bible is the friendship between Jonathan and David. Jonathan was the son of King Saul, and David later became a great king. Despite their different lives and even when their families were on opposing sides, Jonathan and David remained the best of friends. They trusted and cared for each other deeply. When David was in danger, Jonathan helped him and gave him advice. Even when Jonathan’s own life was in danger, he showed loyalty and love toward David.

Imagine if you had a friend who always supported you, even when things were tough, just like Jonathan did for David. That is what true friendship looks like!

How Can We Be Good Friends?

  1. Love at All Times:
    • A true friend is kind and loving whether you are happy or sad. When your friend is having a bad day, listen to them and give them a hug or kind words.
    • Example: If you see a classmate feeling lonely or upset at school, invite them to play with you or talk with them.
  2. Support During Hard Times:
    • Just like Jonathan was there for David, a good friend helps when times are difficult. This means sharing your time, listening carefully, and encouraging each other.
    • Example: If a friend is worried about a test or upset about a fight with another friend, offer to pray with them or help them study.
  3. Honesty and Trust:
    • True friendship is built on trust. When you promise to keep a secret or help someone, make sure you do it. Being honest is important because it shows that you care.
    • Example: If you accidentally break something at a friend’s house, tell the truth instead of hiding it.
  4. Forgiveness:
    • Sometimes friends might hurt each other, either on purpose or by accident. Learning to forgive, just as God forgives us, is very important.
    • Example: If a friend says something mean, take a deep breath, and say, “I forgive you,” just like how God loves us even when we make mistakes.
  5. Prayer for One Another:
    • A wonderful way to strengthen friendship is to pray together. Praying for your friend shows that you care about their well-being and trust God to help them.
    • Example: You might pray before a big exam or when a friend is feeling scared, asking God to give them peace and strength.

Final Thought

Being a good friend means showing love, support, honesty, and forgiveness—just as Jonathan and David did. When we practice these qualities, we reflect God’s love to everyone around us.

Summary:

True friendship is built on love, support, honesty, and forgiveness. When we care for and pray for our friends, we reflect God’s love and make our world a better place.
