Fighting Lies
The enemy and the world are constantly working to distort and oppose God’s truth. As believers, we must actively resist these lies through faith, discernment, and complete reliance on God’s Word.
- Recognising Lies
Lies are anything that contradicts God’s Word. Satan is identified as the father of lies in John 8:44:
“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”
Satan can never stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. And you can only give what you have. Hence, anything satan says or does is full of lies and deceit.
Whatever anyone tells you, or whatever your mind suggests to you, even if it is factual and based on well-researched reasoning, as long as it goes against God’s Word, it is a lie.
- Recognising lies requires us to know God’s Word intimately. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV): “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Also, in Colossians 3:16 (NKJV): “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
The Word of God is the source of truth, guidance, and discernment for us as believers. Without a strong foundation in Scripture, we cannot discern truth from falsehood.
- Resisting Lies Through the Word of God
The Word of God is our weapon against lies. Ephesians 6:17 describes the Word as the “sword of the Spirit,” which we must wield to counter falsehood. For example, when Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus fought back by quoting Scripture:
“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4). - Resisting the Lies of the World
The world often presents lies that go against God’s will, such as pursuing wealth, power, or pleasure at any cost. Romans 12:2 exhorts us:
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
By renewing our minds through Scripture, we can resist worldly lies and align our lives with God’s truth. - Taking Every Thought Captive
Lies often begin in the mind, so believers must guard their thoughts. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 teaches:
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
This means evaluating every thought and rejecting anything that contradicts God’s Word. Furthermore, you must actively replace the lies of the enemy in your mind with God’s word.
Philippians 4:8; “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” NKJV
God wants us as believers of Christ Jesus to focus our thoughts on positive, virtuous, and praiseworthy things.
Practical Steps for Facing Truth and Fighting Lies
- Immerse Yourself in God’s Word
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). Spending time in Scripture (reading and meditating on His Word) helps us understand and live out God’s truth. - Pray for Wisdom and Discernment
James 1:5 promises:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” Prayer strengthens us to discern truth and reject lies. Prayer is what ignites the Word of God in us releasing the spiritual energy required to overcome the lies and deceit of the enemy: Analogy of the Car (believer), Fuel (Word of God) and Car keys to start the engine of the car (Prayer) - Surround Yourself with Godly Counsel
Proverbs 27:17 states:
“As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” Fellowship with other believers helps reinforce truth and expose lies. Listening to sermons and teachings of genuine men and women of God will provide you with the spiritual knowledge and understanding that will also help you overcome the lies of the enemy - Stand Firm in Faith
Ephesians 6:13 reminds us:
“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
Faith anchors us in God’s truth, enabling us to stand firm against the enemy’s lies.
1 John 5:4-5 (NKJV): “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
Faith in Jesus Christ and His Word gives believers the victory over the world. It highlights the power of faith in overcoming challenges, temptations, and trials that come from living in the world. Through the power of faith in Christ Jesus and His Word, we overcome the lies and deceit of the enemy.
In conclusion: Facing the truth requires accepting and living by God’s unchanging Word, even when it challenges our understanding or the world’s perspectives. Fighting lies involves actively resisting falsehood through the Word of God, prayer, and faith.
By embracing these biblical principles, we can walk confidently in God’s truth and overcome the lies that seek to mislead and discourage them. As Jesus Himself declared in John 8:32:
“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
