Luke 8:22-39
Jesus Calms the Storm
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
There are times that the challenges and the storms we face in life proves that we are getting it right. It is not always true that challenges and storms is a proof that you are getting it wrong or not trusting God enough.
Many times, just because God told you that you will go this way and be great, when we face challenges most people turn back instead of continuing the path God has led us to take.
A storm is made up of two elements: water and wind. Every storm has two side to it one that you can see (water) and the one you cannot see (wind). You are in error if you focus only on what you see; the physical.
When Jesus managed the storm, He first addressed the wind – we wrestle not against flesh & blood Ephesians 6:12.
John 10:10 – the presence of the thief means there is treasure enough to steal. Satan can be used as a confirmation that you are valuable.
Luke 8:22 “… let us go on to the other side” – this equals progress; – understand that the devil wants to distract us from making spiritual progress in our walk with God.
Jesus was sleeping despite the raging storm.
Question: Why will Jesus be sleeping in a boat that is rocking violently?
Answer: Jesus has the mindset that God is with Him. He knew that; he has a mentality that though he walks through the valley of shadow of death, he shall fear no evil for God is with Him.
This is the kind of mindset that God wants us as believers; followers of Christ to constantly have.
Lessons to learn:
- Storms happen to all men, including Jesus. It is not unusual the Devil wants us to believe that what we are going through is unique only to us. In a letter to the persecuted believers, the apostle Peter said, “Be strong in your faith. Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters… are going through the same kind of suffering you are” 1 Peter 5:9 NLT
- There are wars in heaven – even with God’s omniscient nature.
- Rest is proof of faith – “Except the Lord builds a house… Psalm 127: 1
- God gives His beloved sleep – Psalm 127: 2
- If faced with any storm, when you do not have control over the happenings, first check if Jesus is in your boat. Jesus can be found through:
- Prophetic word
- Word of God you hold on to
Luke 8 Verse 24: Jesus addressed the wind in the storm first before he addressed the people “Where is your faith?”. He addressed the force behind the problem; the wind making the water to be boisterous. For every storm in life there is wind and there is water. Brothers and sisters, “Stand in the name of Jesus Christ and address the wind!”.
- Regardless of what they met on the way they arrived (Verse 26) they had the staying power – the power of the Holy Spirit. They all arrived, there was no loss.
I prophesy that my family and I, ministerial destiny will arrive!
The grace that makes a man arrive; I receive it in the mighty name of Jesu Christ. I will not bow under pressure in the name of Jesus.
- Until you can see and land on the other side do not stop.
As soon as Jesus arrived another issue met him – there could be a relationship with the possessed man and the storm – verse 28.
Jesus did not reply to the man, He commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.
- They went through the storm just to deliver the man (who is equal to ten cities) from unclean spirit; possessed of the devil. Verse 37 – 39. Jesus looks at things from a destiny dimension – He saved a man, and the man then went out as an evangelist to save cities.
The demons saw Jesus; they saw the “Salvation of a lot of people”.
Whenever you think the attack, salvation is about you, look beyond you.
Every time Satan comes to you, he looks at the destinies beyond you. Satan is fighting people through you. He does not attack for nothing; he does not attack failures. He knows his time is short.
This is Spiritual Intelligence.
Have the mind of Christ; the mindset of Jesus is that “God is with me!” God’s divine presence
When you are faced with storms of life, challenges, Dance in the midst of the storm.
To calm the storm, you do not need skills, you need Jesus Christ. You need skills to move but this is limited.
Remember that: In praise and rest there is prophesy that I will arrive even after 10 – 15years. I will arrive, we will arrive as Jesus is in my boat. Jesus Christ being in my boat makes all the difference!
Victory over storms has a purpose to it:
- That Jesus be revealed.
- That Jesus be glorified.
When you arrive, remember that the arrival has a purpose. Don’t forget in your celebration that there is a person (could be people who needs you) you are sent to who holds the salvation of many other people.
For every arrival there is a mad man crying, he is holding the destinies of other people. When you arrive, it is proof that you have overcome the storms. Your next assignment is to find the person/persons you are sent to lift them in ministries e.g.
