Proverbs 6:2 – “You are snared by the words of your mouth; you are taken by the words of your mouth.” NKJV
Notice that it does not say, “You are snared by the devil.” It says, “by the words of your mouth.”
We can’t blame the devil for all negativity; some are self-inflicted!

I firmly believe in spiritual warfare because we indeed face a stubborn and hostile kingdom of darkness. The devil and his agents know that we already have deliverance and victory through Christ Jesus. Yet, they continue to devise wicked strategies to stop believers from fully experiencing that reality. That is why we must engage in persistent, fervent prayers to enforce our victory in Christ.
So, if you tell me, “I don’t believe in deliverance,” then you may never walk in the fullness of the victory God has ordained for you.
However, many believers are unknowingly giving the enemy legal access to their lives—not through direct demonic attacks but through their own words. Your mouth can be the very invitation card that the enemy uses to gain entrance into your life.
When you constantly speak about how big the “Goliaths” are in your life, your negative confession weakens your faith, allowing your problems to remain—and even strengthen—because of the power of your words.
Negative Confession Destroys Faith
Some believers often say, “I will always fail,” and immediately, demons of failure—who previously had no legal right—begin to orchestrate events that lead to repeated failures.
You hear others say, “I can never be rich,” and before long, poverty relentlessly chases them. Why? Because their own words have opened a door and ensnared them.
The negative words you speak about yourself—whether in frustration, resentment, fear, or even when joking—can be used as a trap by the enemy.
Real-life Example
There was a woman believing God for the fruit of the womb. An intercessor praying with her had a revelation from God that something from her past was causing the delay. As she sought the Holy Spirit, He reminded her of words she had spoken when she was just 17 years old: “I never want to have children.” That careless statement became an evil spiritual altar the enemy was using to block her blessing. Until she renounced those words, she could not experience her breakthrough.
Words Are Like a Hunter’s Trap
The enemy, like a skilled hunter, uses your negative words as ropes to bind you spiritually. The words you speak can create a snare that keeps you trapped in cycles of defeat.
No matter how intense the pressure, no matter what others say, you must make a firm decision: never let negative confessions come out of your mouth.
Self-Induced Curses
In the school of deliverance, we call these self-induced curses—believers ensnared by their own words. What you say about yourself can either bring liberty or bondage. What you say about yourself can either bring victory or defeat. What you say about yourself can either bring abundance or poverty.
The Way Forward
Make up your mind today: no matter what you face, you will only declare God’s Word and will over every situation. Speak life, speak blessings, and speak victory. Your words should agree with what God has said—not with what the enemy is whispering.
Proverbs 18:21 – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Altar call: For anyone reading this article who is not saved and wants to be part of the family of God or you want to re-dedicate your life back to Jesus, please repeat this out loud. “Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I have sinned against you. Lord Jesus forgive me of my sins. I repent of my sins. Lord Jesus come into my life and be my Lord now and forever in Jesus Name
Prayer:
- Father arise in Your mercy, and forgive me where I have used my own mouth to afflict myself, in Jesus Name
- I renounce any evil word that I have declared over myself, consciously or unconsciously by the power in the blood of Jesus, in Jesus Name
- Begin to declare good things over your life now (For instance, “I shall move forward in life, in Jesus Name”)
