Question: Why is Agape-Love crucial for a successful marriage by God’s standard?
In the New Testament, the Greek language uses different words to convey various aspects of love. Let’s explore these terms from a biblical perspective:
Eros (ἔρως): This word refers to romantic love felt towards one’s spouse. Interestingly, the term “erotic” is derived from “Eros.” However, it’s worth noting that the word “Eros” is not actually used in either the Old or New Testaments.
Philia (φιλία): This term describes feelings of brotherly love or affection between close friends. It emphasizes deep friendship and companionship. In the New Testament, “Philia” is used to describe Jesus’ love for His disciples (John 20:2) and for Lazarus (John 11:3).
Agape (ἀγάπη): Agape is a selfless, sacrificial love that Christians are called to have for all people. It goes beyond personal feelings and extends to acting in the best interest of others. Jesus exemplified this love when He said, “Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).
Storge (στοργ): Storge refers to the love within families—between parents, siblings, and other family members. Paul used this word negatively in Romans 1:31 to describe pagans who lacked “natural affection.”
Koine Greek, the language of the New Testament, provides specific words for different types of love, allowing readers to fully understand God’s Word. As Christians, we are called to love everyone, just as God loves us: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another” (John 13:34-35)
Now let us briefly consider why Agape love is central to a marriage that is built on God’s word.
Agape Love and Marriage
From a biblical perspective, Agape love is the highest form of love because it is selfless, unconditional, and sacrificial. Unlike the other types of love, such as Eros (romantic love), Philia (brotherly love), and Storge (familial love), Agape love is not based on emotions, feelings, or mutual benefits. Instead, Agape love is based on a conscious decision to seek the well-being and welfare of others, regardless of the circumstances or their response.
One of the key reasons why Agape love is the best type of love is because it mirrors the love of God Himself. In the Bible, 1 John 4:8 tells us that “God is love,” and the ultimate expression of God’s love for humanity is seen in the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus demonstrated Agape love by willingly laying down His life for the salvation of mankind, even though they were undeserving of such love.
Moreover, Agape love is everlasting and unchanging. It is not dependent on external factors or conditions but remains steadfast and constant. As mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13:8, “Love never fails.” Agape love endures through trials, hardships, and challenges, and it perseveres even when others may falter or fail.
In the context of marriage, Agape love plays a crucial role in building a strong and lasting relationship. When both spouses choose to love each other with Agape love, they prioritize the well-being and happiness of their spouse above their own desires and needs. This means being willing to make sacrifices, forgive shortcomings, and extend grace and mercy, even in difficult times.
Practicing Agape Love in Marriage Involves:
- Putting the needs of your spouse before your own: This means being attentive to their needs, desires, and feelings, and making decisions that are in their best interest.
- Forgiving unconditionally: Just as God forgives us without reservation, spouses should be quick to forgive each other and let go of past hurts and grievances.
- Serving one another: Acts of service are tangible expressions of Agape love. Whether it’s cooking a meal, doing household chores, or offering emotional support, serving your spouse demonstrates your love and commitment.
- Communicating openly and honestly: Agape love fosters open and honest communication, where both partners feel safe to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns without fear of judgment or rejection.
- Remaining committed through thick and thin: Agape love is a covenant commitment to stand by your spouse through all the ups and downs of life, regardless of the challenges that may arise.
By practicing Agape love in your marriage by the leading and assistance of the Holy-Spirit, you will experience deeper intimacy, harmony, and fulfilment in your marriage, as both of you strive to reflect the selfless and sacrificial love of Christ to one another.
