“The doctrine of once saved you are always saved; therefore you can do anything you want” is a dangerous doctrine that is misleading some believers from the whole truth of God’s kingdom principles and sending them unto the path of hell.

Text: John 10:28; “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” BRG

Some believers feel they can carry on smoking, drinking alcohol and so on because they are already eternally saved. John 10:28 is often quoted to support the idea of eternal security: “They shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” On the surface, this seems to imply that once saved, we are always saved. However, we must delve deeper into the context. While no one can snatch believers out of Jesus’ hand, they can choose to put themselves outside of His hand. In John 15:4, Jesus exhorts His disciples to “abide in Me,” emphasizing the need for ongoing relationship and faithfulness. Furthermore, in John 15:6, Jesus warns that those who do not abide in Him are like withered branches thrown into the fire. Thus, salvation though free and by grace is not unconditional; it requires continued faithfulness and abiding in Christ. Colossians 1:21-23 reinforces this conditionality: “And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight if indeed you continue in the faith.” The condition is clear: “if indeed you continue in the faith.” This is an important statement, that your salvation is contingent upon your continued faithfulness. While forgiveness is abundant in Jesus when we repent, repeated yielding to the same temptation can lead to hardening. We become less sorry for our sins, and eventually, we may lose our confidence and depart from God. We put ourselves outside of His hand. How can we avoid falling prey to this misinterpretation?

1) Hold Fast: Continually abide in Christ, maintaining an active relationship with Him.

2) Repentance: When we sin, genuinely repent and seek forgiveness.

3) Grace and Help: Approach the throne of grace boldly, knowing that Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses. We can find mercy and grace to help in times of need (Hebrews 4:15-16). Remember, while Jesus will never let go of us, we have the free will to choose whether to continue holding onto Him or walk away.

I pray for you reading this article, that no matter what life or the enemy throws at you, you will not walk away from God in Jesus Name. You will always hold on to Him and His word, in Jesus Name. Amen!

Altar call: For anyone reading this article who is not saved and wants to be part of the family of God or you want to re-dedicate your life back to Jesus, please repeat this out loud. “Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I have sinned against you. Lord Jesus forgive me of my sins. I repent of my sins. Lord Jesus come into my life and be my Lord now and forever in Jesus Name

Prayer: I will not walk away from Jesus, I will continue to hold on to Him, in Jesus Name
