Bible Text:
Proverbs 18:21; “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” NLT
Introduction
God created the universe with words. He spoke, and creation responded. Light appeared. The heavens were formed. The earth produced life. Everything that exists came into being because God released His Word.

As people created in the image of God, one of the greatest gifts He has given us is the ability to speak. Our words are more than a means of communication. They influence, shape, encourage, build, and establish. Scripture teaches that the tongue carries real spiritual significance. It has the power to bless or curse, heal or wound, unite or divide, encourage or discourage.
This is why God places great importance on how we use our words. Throughout the Bible, we are repeatedly instructed to guard our speech because our words reveal the condition of our hearts and produce lasting consequences.
In today’s article we will discover the biblical truth that our words influence outcomes, and that God calls every believer to surrender their tongue to the Holy Spirit so they can consistently speak life, truth, and faith.
The Tongue Has Real Power for Life or Death: God Gave Us Speech to Create, Bless, and Bring Life
The first recorded words in Scripture are spoken by God Himself.
Throughout Genesis 1, God repeatedly declared, “Let there be,” and every part of creation responded in obedience. His Word released order out of chaos and brought life where there had been nothing.
Hebrews 11:3 (NLT) says, “By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command…”
Everything we see today began with God’s spoken Word.
Although our words do not possess God’s unlimited creative authority, they are still powerful because we are created in His image. God has entrusted us with the ability to influence people, shape environments, and declare His truth. Our words have the ability to build faith, strengthen hope, and bring encouragement to those around us.
When our speech agrees with God’s Word, we become instruments through which He brings life, healing, wisdom, and peace.
Proverbs 18:20 declares, “Wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction.” NLT
The atmosphere surrounding your home, workplace, friendships, and even your own heart is influenced by the words that are consistently spoken there.
This is why Proverbs 18:21 (NLT) says; “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.”
Every word we speak plants a seed. Words filled with faith, truth, love, and wisdom produce life. Words filled with anger, fear, bitterness, deception, and unbelief produce destruction. In time, every seed bears fruit.
James Gives Three Pictures of the Tongue
James provides one of the clearest teachings on the power of speech.
James 3:3-8 explains that although the tongue is one of the smallest parts of the body, it has tremendous influence over the direction of our lives.
Using vivid illustrations, Apostle James teaches that something small can determine the course of something much greater. One sentence can strengthen a marriage, restore a friendship, encourage a struggling believer, or change the direction of someone’s future. Likewise, one careless sentence can cause years of pain.
First Illustration: “The Tongue Is Like Fire”
James says that the tongue is like a fire. Just as a single spark can ignite an entire forest, one careless conversation can create widespread destruction.
Words spread quickly. Words often grow beyond their original moment.
Words have the ability to influence many people long after they have been spoken.
- A single angry sentence may damage a relationship.
- A rumour can destroy a person’s reputation within hours.
- One critical comment can discourage someone for years.
- One careless statement can divide a family, a church, or a workplace.
This is why Scripture repeatedly warns believers to guard their speech.
Proverbs 10:11 (NLT) says, “The words of the godly are a life giving fountain; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.”
–Godly words refresh, strengthen, and restore like fresh water to a thirsty soul.
–Ungodly words wound, poison relationships, and leave lasting scars.
Because of Sin the Tongue Can Become Destructive
Since the fall of humanity, the tongue has been influenced by our sinful nature. When it is not surrendered to the Holy Spirit, it easily becomes an instrument of pride, anger, gossip, slander, deception, and division.
Psalm 52:2 (NLT) says, “All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor…”
Your words can become weapons that leave wounds deeper than physical injuries.
Proverbs 26:28 (NLT) adds, “A lying tongue hates its victims…”
Lies, gossip, manipulation, and false accusations damage trust and destroy relationships. Many of life’s deepest emotional wounds were caused not by physical actions, but by words spoken carelessly or maliciously.
Fire is one of God’s greatest gifts when it is controlled. It provides warmth, light, and protection. Yet when left unchecked, it destroys everything in its path.
Your tongue is no different: When surrendered to the Holy Spirit, your words become instruments of encouragement, healing, truth, and life. When left uncontrolled, they become destructive and leave lasting damage.
For this reason, every believer must daily submit their speech to God, allowing the Holy Spirit to govern not only what they say, but also how and when they say it. A Spirit led tongue becomes a channel through which God’s life flows to others.
Altar call: For anyone reading this article who is not saved and wants to be part of the family of God or you want to re-dedicate your life back to Jesus, please repeat this out loud. “Lord Jesus, I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my old ways and ask You to forgive me. Come into my heart, be my Lord and Saviour. Fill me with Your Spirit and help me live for You. Thank You for saving me, in Jesus Name. Amen“
Prayer-Declaration: I speak to every mountain in my life, MOVE in Jesus’ name. I declare open doors. I declare divine favour. I declare supernatural provision. I declare healing and wholeness. I declare restoration of everything lost. I declare victory in every battle. I declare that my tongue will release God’s will into my world, in Jesus Name. Amen
