The Formula for Growth in Scripture
Part 2: Mindset, Hard Work, Smart Work, and the Holy Spirit
Growth is both internal and external. Discipline, diligence, and consistency help you build patterns of action. These three keys focus on the outward behaviours that support growth
Yet action is shaped by thinking, guided by wisdom, and empowered by God. Scripture addresses not only what we do, but how we think and who ultimately empowers our increase.
4) Mindset
Dear friend, your mindset is the inner force that either builds growth or destroys it. The way you think will always influence your discipline, diligence, and consistency, which are the outward actions that support growth.
Mindset determines direction. Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”
Thought patterns influence decisions, habits, and outcomes.
A biblical mindset begins with renewal. Romans 12:2 teaches, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Growth requires mental transformation. Limiting beliefs, fear, insecurity, and comparison with others will hinder progress. However, faith, vision, and truth based on God’s Word and principles fuel it.
In your walk with God, a renewed mindset shifts from performance to relationship. You begin to see yourself as a son or daughter of God rather than striving for approval. This produces confidence and stability.
In marriage, mindset affects tone and expectation. Viewing your spouse through grace rather than suspicion changes the atmosphere of your home.
In career and business, a growth mindset sees problems as opportunities to improve rather than signals to quit. It embraces learning and adaptation.
Financially, a biblical mindset values stewardship over status. Money is viewed as a tool for purpose rather than identity.
Right thinking lays the foundation for right living.
5) Hard Work
Hard work is another external action that fuels growth and fruitfulness.
Scripture does not glorify laziness. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.”
Dear friend, effort matters.
Hard work involves commitment, sacrifice, and perseverance. It means showing up when motivation is low. It requires pushing through obstacles without surrendering vision.
In spiritual growth, hard work may mean studying Scripture deeply, confronting personal weaknesses, and choosing obedience when it is costly.
In marriage, hard work includes intentional communication, forgiveness, and rebuilding trust when necessary.
In career and business, hard work may involve long hours during startup phases, refining skills, and accepting responsibility for results.
Proverbs 14:23 states, “In all labor there is profit, but idle chatter leads only to poverty.”
Effort generates return. Idleness does not.
Hard work strengthens character and builds capacity.
6) Smart Work
Effort + Wisdom = Smart Work
Many believers work hard in their marriages, careers, and businesses, but because they do not apply divine wisdom, they experience activity without progress. Effort without wisdom becomes motion without meaningful advancement.
Hard work alone is not sufficient. Wisdom directs effort effectively.
Proverbs 24:3 says, “Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.”
Smart work involves strategy, learning, and applying insight. It means improving systems, leveraging strengths, and seeking counsel.
In your walk with God, smart work may include studying under mature godly mentors and applying biblical principles practically rather than merely accumulating knowledge.
In marriage, smart work involves understanding your spouse’s needs and communicating in ways that are meaningful to them.
In business and career, smart work includes strategic planning, continuous education, delegation, and innovation.
Proverbs 11:14 teaches that in the multitude of counselors there is safety. Seeking guidance prevents costly mistakes.
Before we go into the seventh point, I want to say that the Holy Spirit is not a formula. He is God. He is my God. He is co‑equal with God the Father and God the Son, Jesus. In this Kingdom, we cannot talk about growth without the Holy Spirit. He is the One who gives us uncommon growth, far beyond effort alone or the application of the six growth principles. Unbelievers do not understand this. He is the reason a single mustard seed can grow and feed nations. He is the “Grace Factor” that we as believers have, the One who makes us stand out from the world.
7) The Role of the Holy Spirit
While the world emphasises discipline, strategy, and effort, and please don’t get me wrong they are important but Scripture reveals a much deeper truth. True and lasting increase comes from God alone.
Zechariah 4:6 declares, “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.”
Human effort is necessary, but divine empowerment is essential. Divine empowerment is crucial for growth in this Kingdom.
The Holy Spirit guides decisions, convicts hearts, grants wisdom, and opens doors that effort alone cannot unlock. John 15:5 reminds us that without Christ we can do nothing.
In spiritual growth, the Holy Spirit produces fruit by shaping our character to look like Jesus, developing the nine fruit of the Spirit in us as taught in Galatians 5:22–23. He transforms our attitudes, helps us align our choices with God’s Word and Will, and causes godly virtues to grow from the inside out. He is the One who empowers real change, making growth possible in ways our effort alone never could.
In marriage, He softens hearts. In career and business, He grants discernment and favour. In finances, He guides stewardship and generosity.
The Holy Spirit opens doors of influence and advancement that our human effort or wisdom alone could never open.
1 Corinthians 3:6; “I planted, Apollos watered, but God [all the while] was making it grow and [He] gave the increase.” AMPC
Paul planted and Apollos watered, but it was God Who gave the increase. Effort prepares the ground. The Holy Spirit brings growth.
Summary:
Mindset shapes vision. Hard work builds strength. Smart work builds structure. The Holy Spirit breathes life into all of it.
Sustainable and meaningful growth flows from aligning disciplined human responsibility with a fully surrendered dependence on the Holy Spirit. When your effort and His empowerment work together, growth becomes steady, fruitful, and lasting.
