Theme Verse: “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” – Proverbs 23:7a (NKJV)

Introduction

One of the greatest hindrances to fulfilling divine destiny is a wrong perception of ourselves.

As a coach, when working with clients who struggle with a negative self-perception and repeatedly fail to achieve their set targets—no matter how well-planned those goals may be—I begin by unpacking their thoughts, emotions, and challenges. This process helps gain deeper insight and clarity, enabling them to move toward the success they seek.

God may call and equip you, but if you do not see yourself through His eyes, you may retreat from the very purpose He designed you for. In Scripture, time and again, God builds up the self-image of those He calls. Why? Because you cannot walk in a destiny you don’t believe belongs to you.

Let’s explore this with the example of Gideon, as well as Abraham, and draw spiritual principles to help us develop a healthy, God-centred self-image.

1. Gideon: From Fear to Faith

Judges 6:12 (NKJV):
“And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, ‘The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!’”

When we first meet Gideon, he is hiding from the Midianites. He saw himself as weak, insignificant, and unqualified. In verse 15, Gideon responds:
“O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

But God didn’t agree with Gideon’s low self-image. He called out his true identity—“mighty man of valor.” God had to rebuild Gideon’s self-worth before Gideon could rise to lead Israel. God sees beyond your insecurities and calls you according to His purpose, not your past or present weakness.

2. Abraham: Seeing to Believe

Genesis 15:5 (NKJV):
“Then He brought him outside and said, ‘Look now toward heaven, and count the stars…So shall your descendants be.’”

Before Abraham could believe God’s promise, he had to see a new picture. God was helping him replace a barren image with a vision of abundance. It wasn’t just a promise—it was a renewal of identity. God was forming his self-image around His Word, not his circumstances.

Dear reader, your circumstances do not define you. Build your self-worth and identity upon the foundation of God’s powerful word.

3. Self-Image vs. Self-Worth in Christ

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV):
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

God doesn’t want us walking in guilt, fear, or feelings of inadequacy. He wants us rooted in our new identity—righteous, equipped, chosen, and empowered.

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV):
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

This is not pride. It’s Christ-centred confidence, the kind Gideon had to grow into to fulfil his calling.

Let the belief in your unique and divinely given abilities and qualities be linked to God and His word.

4. You Are Significant by Design

Jeremiah 1:5 (NKJV):
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you… I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

Like Gideon and Abraham, you were created to bring value to the world. Your self-significance is rooted in God’s design and destiny for you. Don’t let fear or self-doubt rob you of impact.

Conclusion

You may feel small, afraid, or unworthy—so did Gideon. But God calls you according to who He knows you are, not who you think you are.

So develop a strong self-image by:

  • Believing what God says about you
  • Rooting your self-confidence in Christ
  • Walking in your God-given significance

Like Gideon, once your identity aligns with God’s view, you’ll rise to fulfil your divine purpose.
