Many believers only focus on spiritual growth which is important and our main priority but neglect the importance of maintaining their physical well-being. However, from a biblical perspective, God is deeply concerned about our physical health. While we trust in His protection and preservation, we also have a responsibility to take care of our bodies.
Proverbs 23:2 (GNT) warns us: “If you have a big appetite, restrain yourself.”
This verse highlights the importance of self-control, particularly when it comes to our eating habits. Just as we exercise discipline in our spiritual walk, we must also be disciplined in caring for our bodies, as they are temples of the Holy Spirit.

1. God Cares About Our Physical Health
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV) reminds us:
“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
This passage teaches that our bodies belong to God. If we truly honour Him, we should take care of our physical health just as we take care of our spiritual lives. Neglecting our well-being—whether through overeating, unhealthy lifestyle choices, or neglecting rest—dishonours God’s gift of life.
2. Healthy Eating and Self-Control
The Bible encourages moderation and wisdom in food consumption. Proverbs 25:16 (NKJV) states:
“Have you found honey? Eat only as much as you need, lest you be filled with it and vomit.”
This teaches us that even good things can be harmful if consumed in excess. Overeating, indulgence in junk food, and a lack of dietary discipline can lead to health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Instead, God wants us to be mindful of what we eat and practice self-control.
3. Rest and Sleep Are Important
In today’s fast-paced world, many people neglect proper rest in pursuit of success. Yet, rest is not laziness; it is a biblical principle. Psalm 127:2 (NKJV) says:
“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so He gives His beloved sleep.”
God values our rest and sleep because they are essential for our physical and mental health. Chronic sleep deprivation leads to stress, anxiety, and weakened immunity. Jesus Himself rested when He needed to (Mark 6:31), setting an example for us to follow.

4. Exercise and Physical Strength
The Bible acknowledges the importance of physical training. 1 Timothy 4:8 (NKJV) states:
“For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.”
While spiritual growth is the ultimate goal, this verse does not dismiss the benefits of physical exercise. Please dear reader, do not be a “couch-potato.”
Being a “couch-potato” refers to a sedentary lifestyle characterised by excessive sitting and minimal physical activity, often associated with watching TV or lounging for extended periods. This inactivity negatively impacts health in various ways. It can lead to weight gain, increased risk of obesity, and cardiovascular issues due to reduced calorie burning and poor circulation. Long periods of inactivity can also weaken muscles and bones, impair metabolism, and increase the likelihood of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Moreover, a lack of exercise is linked to mental health challenges, including stress and anxiety, highlighting the importance of staying active
As believers in Christ, taking care of our bodies through regular movement, whether walking, stretching, or engaging in sports, improves endurance and overall health. We are called to be good stewards of the bodies God has given us.
5. Avoiding Harmful Habits
God desires that we refrain from destructive habits that harm our bodies, such as excessive alcohol consumption, drug abuse, smoking, and gluttony. Proverbs 20:1 (NKJV) warns:
“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.”
I know that some believers drink alcohol and say they consume it in moderation. However, I hold a different perspective based on God’s Word in Proverbs 20:1, which warns against it—therefore, I choose to avoid alcohol altogether! Alcohol opens the door to the enemy, even when consumed in moderation, in ways that our human minds cannot fully comprehend. In a YouTube short by Pastor Derek Prince, of blessed memory, he shared how drinking only 2-3 glasses of wine attracted the spirit of stroke to him. He had to engage in warfare-prayer for deliverance from this affliction. He then resolved to avoid anything that might hinder him from fulfilling God’s work and finishing His mission. Likewise, modern habits like drug use, smoking, and excessive caffeine consumption harm our well-being and should be avoided.
6. Mental and Emotional Health
God does not only care about our physical bodies but also our mental and emotional well-being. Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV) says:
“A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.”
This verse highlights the connection between mental and physical health. Stress, anxiety, and depression can take a toll on the body. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us to bring our worries to God in prayer, and He will give us peace. Taking care of our minds by avoiding toxic environments, practicing gratitude, and surrounding ourselves with godly community is part of maintaining good health.
7. Living a Balanced Life
Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NKJV) states:
“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.”
This teaches us the importance of balance in life. While working hard is important, we must also take time to relax, eat well, exercise, and nurture relationships. Living a balanced life allows us to serve God effectively without burnout.
Conclusion
Taking care of our physical health is not a lack of faith—it is an act of stewardship and obedience to God. While we trust God to preserve us, we must also take responsibility for our well-being. Healthy eating, exercise, rest, avoiding harmful habits, and maintaining emotional well-being are all ways we honour God with our bodies. When we align our lifestyle with biblical principles, we position ourselves to serve God with strength, joy, and longevity.
