Question: Dear authors of Feast of Light, what is meant by a believer having an eternal perspective. Could you break it down for me to understand?

Answer: There are a number of indicators that suggest having an eternal perspective as a believer, but I would focus on three today;

1. When You Prioritise Spiritual Growth Over Material Success

Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Our pursuit of success, wealth, or recognition should never eclipse our primary goal: growing closer to God. True success comes when we align our hearts with His will. By focusing on God’s kingdom—prayer, scripture, worship, and service—we entrust Him with our needs. This doesn’t mean we neglect our responsibilities but rather that we approach them with a spirit of faith and obedience, trusting in God’s abundant provision. Remember, earthly success is fleeting, but spiritual growth lasts for eternity.

2. You Live with Eternity in Mind

2 Corinthians 4:18 – “While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

This verse reminds us to fix our gaze beyond the fleeting nature of worldly wealth, achievements and struggles. Possessions lose their value, accomplishments fade into history, and challenges come and go. Yet, faith, love, hope, and our walk with God endure forever. Living with eternity in mind shifts our priorities—it encourages us to invest in relationships, help those in need, and share the Gospel so that others may experience eternal life. This eternal perspective allows us to persevere through trials, knowing our reward awaits in heaven.

3. You Deliberately and Consciously Make Choices That Honor God

Before making decisions, reflect on questions like these:

  • Will this deepen my relationship with God?
  • Will this demonstrate God’s love and lead others to Christ?
  • Will this decision hold eternal significance?

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” When we rely on God’s wisdom instead of our limited human reasoning, He guides us towards choices that bring glory to His name. Whether in relationships, careers, or personal pursuits, decisions made in light of God’s will lead to peace, joy, and eternal rewards.

Final Remark

Matthew 6:20 – “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

An eternal perspective helps believers focus on what truly matters: storing up treasures in heaven. These treasures include acts of faith, love, and obedience—things that can never be lost or taken away. While God blesses us with material provisions on earth, our true inheritance is reserved in heaven. Let’s not chase after temporary, worldly things but invest in what will last forever: our relationship with God and the impact we make for His glory.

May this wisdom guide us daily as we prioritise His kingdom, live with eternity in view, and honour Him in all we do. God’s promises stand firm: He will take care of our needs when we seek Him first

Altar call: For anyone reading this article who is not saved and wants to be part of the family of God or you want to re-dedicate your life back to Jesus, please repeat this out loud. “Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I have sinned against you.
