Prayer is an essential part of our Christian faith. It is not just a religious activity but a divine command and a powerful tool through which we engage with God, bring His will to pass on earth, and experience transformation in our lives. Below are a few key reasons why we pray:

1. We Pray to Obey God’s Command – Luke 18:1
Jesus Himself commanded us to pray without ceasing. In Luke 18:1 (NKJV), He said:
“Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.”
This means that prayer is not optional for believers—it is a command from God. Just as a child speaks to their loving father, we are to maintain constant communication with our Heavenly Father through prayer. Obedience in prayer strengthens our faith and keeps us connected to God’s presence. When we diligently spend time with God in the place of prayer, we know God’s ways.
2. We Pray to Make God Reign Over Everything on Earth
Prayer is a way of inviting God’s rule and authority over our lives, communities, and the world.
Matthew 6:10 (NKJV) states:
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
When we pray, we align ourselves with God’s kingdom and establish His authority in our situations. Prayer allows God’s will—peace, righteousness, healing, and salvation—to be made manifest on earth. It is through our prayers that the reign of darkness on earth, over our lives, our families, and our nations, is pushed back, allowing God’s light to shine forth
3. To Obtain a Change in Our Life for the Better – Luke 18:35-43
Prayer is a tool for personal transformation. In Luke 18:35-43, we see the story of a blind man, Bartimaeus, who persistently cried out to Jesus for healing:
“Then those who went before warned him that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’” – Luke 18:39 (NKJV)
His persistence in prayer led to a miracle, and he received his sight. This teaches us that through prayer, we can experience divine intervention and breakthrough. No matter how difficult a situation may seem, God can turn things around when we call upon Him in faith.
4. To Deal with the Kingdom of Darkness
The devil constantly seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), but through prayer, we can overcome the forces of darkness. Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV) reminds us:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
Prayer is our weapon of warfare. When we pray, we exercise spiritual authority over demonic forces and break the strongholds of the enemy. James 4:7 (NKJV) says:
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
Through consistent and fervent prayer, we destroy evil plans and enforce God’s victory over every power of darkness.
5. To Bring Usual and Unusual Things to Life – Numbers 16:30
Prayer unlocks both the ordinary and extraordinary things in our lives. Numbers 16:30 (NKJV) states:
“But if the Lord creates a new thing, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the pit, then you will understand that these men have rejected the Lord.”
We can use prayer to cause the miraculous (which can mean a new thing) to manifest by the power of God. Num 16:30 refers to God’s ability to do the unexpected. When we pray, we invite God’s supernatural power to work in ways beyond human understanding. Prayer can bring healing, provision, divine favour, and miraculous breakthroughs that defy logic.
Conclusion
Prayer is not just a religious practice; it is a spiritual necessity. As believers, we pray to obey God’s command, establish His reign on earth, experience personal transformation, combat the forces of darkness, and unlock divine possibilities.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NKJV) reminds us:
“Pray without ceasing.”
Let us be steadfast in prayer, knowing that through it, we draw closer to God and see His mighty works in our lives!
God bless you richly in Jesus Name. Amen
