Proverbs 16:19 (NKJV) says:
“Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud.”

This verse teaches us that God values humility more than worldly success gained through prideful ways. A humble spirit in its simplicity refers to a heart attitude that acknowledges our dependence on God, treats others with kindness and respect, and rejects all forms of arrogance.

What is a Humble Spirit?

A humble spirit is not weakness but strength under control. It’s a heart-attitude or mind-set of recognising that all we have—our talents, abilities, and successes—come from God. A humble person does not seek to exalt themselves but rather serves others and submits to God’s will.

Key Characteristics of a Humble Spirit:

  1. Dependence on God – A humble person acknowledges that without God, they can do nothing (John 15:5).
  2. Teachable and Correctable – They are willing to receive instruction and correction (Proverbs 15:33).
  3. Servanthood – True humility is demonstrated through serving others, just as Jesus did (Mark 10:45).
  4. Gratitude – A humble heart is thankful, recognising that every good gift comes from God (James 1:17).
  5. Meekness, Not Weakness – Humility is strength under control, just as Jesus was meek yet absolutely powerful (Matthew 11:29).

Why is Having a Humble Spirit Important to God?

  1. God Resists the Proud but Gives Grace to the Humble
    • James 4:6 (NKJV) says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
    • Pride separates us from God, but humility allows us to receive His blessings and favour.
  2. Jesus Christ is the Perfect Example of Humility
    • Philippians 2:5-8 (NKJV) shows how Jesus, though being God, humbled Himself and became a servant.
    • As believers, we are called to imitate Christ’s humility.
  3. Humility Leads to Honor
    • Proverbs 22:4 (NKJV) says, “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life.”
    • God rewards those who walk in humility with honour, both in this life and the next.
  4. Humility Brings Spiritual Growth
    • When we have a humble spirit, we are open to learning and growing in faith. (Psalm 25:9).
    • God reveals deep mysteries to the humble. The humble will enjoy deeper intimacy with God. God also bestows uncommon power upon the truly humble to perform exploits in His kingdom and showcase His glory on earth.
  5. It Keeps Us in Right Standing with God
    • Micah 6:8 (NKJV) says, “What does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”
    • Walking humbly before God means acknowledging His authority in every area of our lives.

Final Remark

Proverbs 16:19 reminds us that it is better to walk humbly with the lowly than to gain temporary riches and power through pride. True humility brings peace, wisdom, and blessings from God. As believers, we must continually ask God to help us develop a humble spirit, following the example of Jesus Christ.
